GS to RT - Opinions?

I,m one of those that have both :augie and all I'd add is that the RT is a GSA with a Radio, and one that my feet actually reach the ground.

The riding position is absolutely the same, upright correct stance. It is just a nice bike to ride.

What it does not have is the street presence of the GSA. And that, on some occasions is worth having when somebody is about to pull out in front of you.

Anyone know if a good RT forum? Can't find a UK one...

Anyone know if a good RT forum? Can't find a UK one...

Started biking year before last on a K75RT. Bomb proof, VERY economical and THE best fairing EVER for rider protection - open to debate.

Then, early last year, had a go on a mate's 1200GSA. WOW!!!!!!
For a newbie, couldn't believe the handling and get up and go.
No wollowing round bends, squirming on white lines and trying to wring the neck out of the engine at silly rpm.

However, MY neck could not cope with the buffeting of the wind on that high open road heading for Grantown on Spey.

So I thought of a 12RT.
Plus every second biker I saw, up North in Scotland, was on a GS and on 'expedition' - big boxes et al.
Why pretend to be a Charlie or a Hughie......

Mate haggled with Motorrad Dalkeith for a 12RT. Never looked back. 6k miles in 4 months. Tour of Ireland, culminating in 925 miles in a wknd picking up 3 of the 4 corners of Scotland. The last day was a monsoon, Ardnamurchan, Glencoe and home to Linlithgow. But I still arrived home dry and ready for more.

Joined this forum for the great banter and advice. But have kept quiet about being a closset RT rider. Mind you the call name is a bit of a give away!

I know EBBO has a 12RT, followed his travels to Norway..........and this is inspiring me to do the same, despite the lack of ferries.

I wonder how many of you 'GSer's' are really closset RT owners or dare I say it, coveters!!

:flag

ps we're still crap at rugby!

pps don't know if there is a GB RT forum, maybe should start one up......

Another convert to an RT. I've had a GS and GSA which I loved but I just find the RT a better all rounder. I too commute into central London and don't find filtering any worse than the GS, I wouldn't however be too keen leaving it in one of those parking bays frequented by scooters.

After many Beemers since the 70's and two recent GS's...an 1150 and a 1200...I managed to get hold of a great 1150RT...a local bike with just 11k on it...as a year round rider I've not looked back :thumb

good thread mike:)

ive developed an RT itch since i had a go of my mates 1150 super comfy fantastic weather protection , and a damn site more fun to ride that i ever would have given it the credit for:D

when ive had enough of my GS i think i'll head down the RT road:) but it wont be for a while yet:P:P

Yuv all got RT's... where do you put all the Tourabling that is advocated on this forum:augie:D

I recently read the "Long Way Round" book. They seem like good guys but don't they "effing moan:augie Can't say I want to look like 'em on my GS. T'sfunny how many folk hadn't heard of GS's pre LWD and when I 1st got an 11GS they were still "cult" bikes and the only even slightly "cool" BMW. How times change................................................................

Easy...Wunderlich do RT bling...you get to spend even more filthy lucre...better service than Touratat as well ;)

Filtering I'm no so worried about - more the parking - unfortunately I have to use on-street parking (or pay £5 a day in an NCP) and trying to 'jigsaw puzzle' and RT in between a pair of scuffed up scooters doesn't sound like an option... certainly not if I want to keep the RT scratch-free!

OMG I thought it was just me, I have just ordered an R1200RT SE having sold my 09 GSA. Loved it but the ladies didnt..

Hope I like the RT as much.
