Not trying to be funny, but have you checked the manual?
What year of bike? Servo assist? ABS?
Common causes are the ABS system throwing its toys out the pram for a perceived fault, or brake levers being fouled by handguards, among other things.
Get a bit more detail, and a failure scenario, and I'm sure the luminaries of UKGSer can come up with something.

Sorry for late reply I've been away.....
Ok it's an 06 GSA 11000 miles with ABS
I know about the handguard issues.
Light goes of immediately after I start the engine.
Just flashes up everytime on system warm up?
Cheers for help!?

I believe it is the ABS doing its self test.
Does the light go out after a few meters? If so, then its normal as it has calibrated itself.
If it doesnt go out or comes on during a run, then the ABS is FUBAR'd.
If I am wrong, I am sure someone will be along soon to correct me.

ABS warning light blinks on startup, clears when 5mph exceeded.

Agree with you, seems a little harsh being called that.. You obviously have been too busy enjoying the BMW riding experience instead of reading the bloody owners manual. Don't worry though he's probably had a bad day and will be over it in the morning.

This is how "problems" appear and 1150 owners get yet another chance to sully our pride and joy.

It is possible to do a hill start while the bike goes through it's start up checks (without touching the brakes) ........ this was another "problem" that flabbergasted me.

It sounds like a similar problem to the one I had on my (06 GSA with ABS 17000miles) the warning light would come on when i'd been riding for a while, if i turned the bike off and restarted it went out, but on occasion would illuminate again.
I returned it to dealers who checked memory and told me it could be the rear abs / speed sensor, they cleared the memory and told me to wait till it happened again so it would record the fault. It happened again on more than one occasion, and again the dealer read the fault, again it was the rear abs / speed sensor, the dealer did nothing to rectify the problem.
whilst doing a service 2 months ago I removed the rear abs / speed sensor and it was bloody filthy, I cleaned all the crap off and refitted it and to date the light has not illuminated as a fault.
