Me and a mate are leaving on the 4th of april and taking a steady ride down ( air heads ! ) to Morocco...It's our first time out of Europe so i could be fun

Morroccan Trip
Hi Timolgra,
I've just put down a deposit on my new GS12, or GS12A, depending on the test ride. I'd love to hear about the trip if you're doing another in the autumn. Maybe I can tag along.
I was hoping to go down to Spain and turn left, then somewhere in Libya or Tunisia get a ferry up to Italy. Can't go through Egypt due to the cost of Carnet (800%!).
Where do you get your route and local info? Guide book or experience?
I've had bikes before and my previous Beemer was a 75/6, years ago but I haven't done chat rooms. If we want to get in touch about this, how do I find you again, or vice versa?

Morocco Update
For those that are travelling here soon, I arrived via Ceuta today, and am now in Meknes. The border stuff took about 20 mins, assisted as I was by the biggest and ugliest looking Moroccan I have ever seen. There has been a lot of rain recently so lots of mud and gravel has been washed onto the roads in some places. Also note that the road south from Ceuta via Mdiq has been diverted and from the looks of the work might be for some time. As you approach Mdiq there is a prominent roundabout, probably with a policeman there, and the signs suggest that Tetouan is straight ahead. The next sign then told me that the road ahead is closed, and the deviation took me right into the middle of a festering housing area. I eventually discovered that if you turn left at the first roundabout, and follow the main road into the town centre you actually get to the right road; The weather now is warm and, for a change dry, as Spain and Ceuta yesterday were very wet.

You will get conflicting advise about the Rif mountain regions many will say avoid Ketama full stop. So for the hell of it last year we rode from Chefchouen to Ketama along the stunning road which runs along the spine of the Rif. Every bend someone jumped out to try and sell us dope. NO NO NO
If we stopped a black Merc would cruise menacingly past, and stopping for fuel in Ketama was 'alarming' BUT it was brilliant and am very glad we did it just to find out for ourselves.
Don't do it alone, don't stay in Ketama or that region, don't buy dope, keep your head down and eyes open. If you get off the bike to look at the view etc make sure you can ride off quickly etc.
Should you be in a group where none have been to 'third world' country before it could prove a daunting introduction if you do it on the way down south
If the weather is poor or the clouds are low then I would'nt bother.

Don't be coy when it comes to guides offering their 'services' particularly when travelling alone. Locals often are keen to show you their country. You get a welcome conversation and will almost certainly see and learn far more, and it'll cost little.
(Especially if you're a tight git like Steptoe and pay with Tic Tacs
)A saturday night in Whitby would be more intimidating.

Apologies if this isnt news to anybody but as Im here thought it might help. Fuel here is about 10 dirhams a litre, and I have seen hardly any stations that accept credit cards. Some that display signs for unleaded dont have any, and lots more do only diesel. If you are using local hotels as opposed to IBIS etc many also dont take cards! Almost every town I,ve been through has a cash machine, usually BMCE, so cash is readily available. Still snow on the mountain tops south of Marrakech, but won,t be heading that way until Tuesday.

thanks steptoe and timolgra for the information on morocco .I leave on Friday the 7th April and arrive in Bilbo on Sunday morning,then its stright done through Spain. I won't cross into Morocco till the next morning,dont fancy getting into Morocco in the Night.
At least if I run out of Gum I can try and find Steptoe .
