Can anyone suggest the best parts of the wall to visit?
My Daughter is at Durham uni and I have promised that I would take her to see Mr Hadrians finest when I go to visit her.

The wall near Gilsland and Greenhead is well worth a look - see http://www.hadrianswallvillages.org.uk/History.aspx.

And while there, a visit to Vindolanda http://www.vindolanda.com/ would round things off nicely. Some of the exhibits there are truly astonishing, and the site layout shows the size and organisation of the Roman presence.

Go on the A68 from Durham follow signs to Corbridge.
Get yourself onto the military road (follow signpost to Chollerford)

Left at the Chollerford roundybout takes you onto the Military road to the 1st stop.

Hexham's worth a punt as well, some good Anglo Saxon stuff in the abbey and the the town gaol

1. Chesters Roman Fort, cavalry fort. quite extensive, lots of stuff in the museum, but walk away from the main buildings and museum towards the river to see the main ruin

2. Houseteads, as previous recommendation

3. Vindlanda as above, as above.

4. Up your bum Windae licker

can't remember where along the wall it is (but other peeps's linkies above will tell you anyway), but +1 for vindolanda.

I may even have been an obnoxious teenager or thereabouts when I visited , but I still remember it being bally good

It's a myth that the Romans built the wall it was a wee Scot called Shuggie that built it to keep the English out of Scotland. onyack

Consider Segedunum at Wallsend as well

Just north of the visitor centre at Twice Brewed you can park and walk along the wall past the bit where Kevin Costner's Robin Hood had a run in with the Sheriff's men (not really... it was a fillum). There's a milecastle handy as well. The Twice Brewed isn't a bad for an overnighter either.
