Hello Guys,

On my 2012 R1200RT full beam and flash has stopped working.

There was no warning illuminated in the display area to indicate that a lamp was out.

I changed the bulb anyway, but its still not working.

Any thoughts or advice on finding the fault???

Chris....

Guys,

On other forums members are saying that they have had the handlebar switches replaced free of charge as part of a BMW campaign, anybody heard of this?

I've had switchgear replaced on an LC as warranty items. A multimeter would give you a good idea of what's going wrong though, you can grab one for peanut's from Maplins.

It is probably the switch

A good starting point would be a call to your local dealer explaining the symptoms and what you have read on the internet about FOC replacement under BMW's goodwill parameters. I have heard of K series bikes (which have the same switch) having such issues and some have been replaced FOC even though the bike was well outside of the warranty period. I'm not aware that BMW have issued a campaign to replace these switches although it may be being done at point of service?

I had my switchgear changed 3 times FOC by dealer on my "11" plate RT - both sides each time without arguments!

I believe BMW have agreed to change switchgear out of warranty, this because repeat failings are commonplace. BMW had several replacement parts designed and issued, only to fail again, it was embarrassing. I believe the root cause was the use of printed circuits (or similar) inside the switches which breakdown in extremes of weather, mostly heat and sometimes wet. Rumour has it they have finally sorted the problem.

PS. I still love my RT, warts and all

Goodmorning geordielad,

Was your motorcycle covered by a warranty when they were replaced?

The first set, yes, but the other two were through "goodwill" - Williams at Manchester and I have found them to be very helpful and quite sympathetic, but then again, that's what you pay BMW prices for!

I think I'd be paying BMW prices for a well engineered and manufactured piece of equipment, which is not susceptible to failing the moment it encounters a bit of wet weather. Even my old Ducati seems to manage that!!

If everything in life was perfect then Kylie Minogue would be sat on my face :augie

Maybe, but that would depend on other factors, like you being attractive to Kylie and able to function to the required standard. I'm not able to comment on either of those variables. I do know about reliability engineering and it's importance in design.

I can accept that everything breaks, that's what reliability figures tell us. For the switchgear, it's not inconceivable that it would be exposed to water and extemes of temperature either hot or cold. Therefore, I'd expect the design to reflect the environment it is, highly likely, to be exposed to and not to fail at the earliest opportunity.

Obviously BMW's component selection processes are not as good as they would like us to believe. Probably a victim of a procurement process focused on price not value. Not unlike the VW HT coil issue of a few years ago.

Yep, that stopped me buying a 2 litre Bora although IIRC that was every coil pack on every petrol 1.6, 1.8 & 2 litre model?

What we have here is a few switch packs on some bikes

I agree it shouldn't happen but it can and unfortunately does .... it's how it is dealt with that's important. How else are you going to find out how good your Motorrad Service Dept is? :D
