800gs heated grips

Hi All

A simple slightly technical question. out on the GS today and thought I would use the heated grips - woosy I know on a warmish day but I needed a play - but after 15 minutes or so the grips went cold. Turned them off and on a couple of times and no heat. Stopped the bike for a couple hours and on the return trip they worked but again stopped after 15 minutes. Do they have a cut out or do they sound faulty - any help would eb gratefully received.

Sounds like a fault to me ... best give your local stealer call to confirm..

Thanks for the advice - 300 miles left to first service so I'll do it then as I cannot see it beibng dangerous.

Hmm ok I might be digging around the wrong hole here, but I would think that the grips are controlled by the CAN-bus.

Which makes me want to ask - what other electrical devices do you have on the bike? Installed any GPS or extra socket or anything? Anything to exceed the CANbus load limit?

Or it could be that they are trying to get too hot (faulty thermostat?) which in turn causes more current drain than the CANbus can handle causing the cutout.

They certainly don't get very hot - least not as hot as my old oxford aftermarket jobbies on my last bike.

I find I don't have much use for them since I moved to Singapore...

If the BMW grips don't get hot, they could use the same power, just be very inefficient!

There is a 'factory' limit of 5A on the connector by the ignition. I believe it can be increased to 10A or maybe 15A (can't remember which) by the workshop.

If your going to use more power:
1. Create a fused connection directly to the battery
2. Remember to switch off accessory
3. Make sure combination of engine + lights + accessories used at the same time < 400W of the alternator.

It'd be interesting to know how much spare capacity there is on the bike to add heated clothing, pipe warmer, etc...

Mine cut in and out too. Although if I leave them on they cut back in a few minutes later. Bloody annoying in the middle of winter when you're just starting to get your fingers warm.

I figured that they were designed (rather poorly) to do that.

I have no other electrical goodies - yet! Just before they cut out the fitst time there was a smell of rubber burning - this was not my tyres! The grips are working again but vary in temperature and sometimes get very hot. My electrical knowledge is non existennt so not sue about CANbus limits. Whatever is going on is variable and annoying!

Yep, this is normal. I don't think they go completely cold, more you are used to them being much hotter. They kind of burst the heat through, then turn off and then another burt of heat, etc.

You might think that they are going completely cold, but they are not. I know this because I rod in -6 degrees and my hands froze when i turned them off.

Left Heated grip not working

My heated grips were working hundreds last week but when i put them on this morning, only the right worked while the left was colder that the Thames. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions on what to check otherwise it’s off to the BMW crew for another warranty claim. Just need to find the time.

Magic word - warranty.
Don't mess with it apart from checking obvious connections/fuses.

+1 Mine gave up the ghost during the summer.

Definitely a warranty job - I believe it also affects other models.

Hi Guys

I recently picked up 2nd hand F650gs on a 08 plate Its a base model without trip, abs, and heated grips. I'm trying to fit a set of oxford heated grips which are a good bit of kit, i have fitted them before to previous bikes and never had any problems. The GS seems to combine the grip and the switch unit in one piece so before i go in with the hacksaw i thought i would ask has anyone fitted them to a new 650 and if so what was it like

Look at the assembly ... IIRC, there's a separate clamp inside the housing that holds the switch-gear together and clamps it onto the bar ... My preference would be to use the appropriate tool rather than a hacksaw ..

Once the switchgear is off you should be able to persuade the grip off.. compressed air is really useful for this...

I fitted a set of Oxford grips to an RT a couple of years ago - they're good grips, but a bit cumbersome - you'll have to be absolutely sure about position and rotation when you glue the grips to the bars ... once they're on they're on ...

Handlebar grips

Trying this forum as I got no reply elsewhere!

I am putting a Renthal bar on the bike, but ..
what is the best way of removing the grips from the original bar and putting them onto the new bar without ripping / damaging them, or indeed damaging the bar itself ??

On a previous bike I used a small screwdriver to make a gap between the bar and the grip, slap a bit very soapy water in there and work it around, it should give soon enough.

I'm assuming you dont have heated grips?

If you have a compressor .... s'easy as pie they'll just float right off...

BUT --- on the 800 the grips on both sides have their own tubes, the throttle twists, the other side doesn't but is fixed to the switch housing which is in turn fixed to the handlebar... see where this is going?

You'll need to check that the OD of the replacement bar would suit the grip units..
