Heated Grips

Kaze ...

Did both go at the same time? Bloody odd if they did.

If the dealer isn't doing them under warranty, check the recent threads on this same subject - you might be able to save yourself a sh!tload of cash for what it essentially a fairly simple repair...

Whats wrong with these BMW grips? My left one has failed, I thought the grip was seperate to the heater element but mine seems to be fully bonded.
£52.00 for a new one is not too bad, (£75 for right hand not so good)
I will cut it open when the new one arrives to see what has failed.

Sooty, it's just glued... Use a spoon handle or something to ease it off the grip once you've cut it... You can then replace the grip with something like a sticky Renthal which will be 100% better than the std bmw grip.

R & G Heated grips

Just got some heated grips for SWMBO 650 twin. It recommends linking it into a switched positive and negative ( ie somewhere maybe on the lighting circuit)

Anyone done this? Any recommendations? Any effect with the canbus system?

Thanks in advance

Richie

You will probably need to wire this via a relay. The current draw on heated grips will probably trip the canbus. You can wire a trigger either via the headlight or get the canbus cable that is used for powering sat navs.

Heated grips....Non BMW

Do you have non BMW heated grips fitted? If so, where did you mount your controller? Am going to fit SWMBO heated grips this weekend and need to mount the controller somewhere. Thinking if sticking it to a custom made ally plate of some descriptions. Pics would be useful!

Thanks

Richie

I fitted the control switch for my Symtec heated grip system in the panel on top of the "tank" opposite to the accessory socket. On reading your post properly I now see you have a controller type thingie, so what I did will not really help.:blast

Heated Grips Not Heating Up

SWMBO bought a F650GS last month and has found that the factory fitted heated grips are not heating up that well. She finds that even on setting two the level of heat is poor. I tried the bike out today and with the grips on full I was able to hold the grips with bare hands without any problems. If I tried this on my GS or RT I would soon get burnt hands.

Has anyone else found this on the 650/800's?

I can only speak for my 650 twin. But on 2 eg full you can easily hold the grips with bare hands. They are toasty warm but no more. I allways thought mine are were working ok. Sounds like your gs rt are more hard core.

Thanks Steve. I think they should be hotter so I look forward to hearing from others about how theirs work. Her ER5 has a set of the elements that fit under the standard grips and the heat from them is much greater than the factory grips on her F650.

Heated Grips Not Heating Up

I have a 2010 800GS bought new and the heated grips have never been very impressive. I can feel that they are on but not much more than that.

The wife's bike has OEM heated grips (04 single). The grip heat is poor but when I installed hand guards the grips felt hotter..Windblast...
I on the other hand have oxford hot hands on my bike and they are toooo hot on 3/4 let alone full power...
After market heaters.....

Im with Tim, except cant take them on full power for long even with thick gloves on.

But now riding with summer Gloves and hardly on the first setting. But thats thanks to Val H. and thoes amazing Muffs :D :cool

Not so hot

Hi, I had my f800gs for 13k & the grips are not as hot as k1200s or GSA, I assumed they were of a lower wattage so as to not overload the alternator output.
