Heated Grips

Im with Tim, except cant take them on full power for long even with thick gloves on.

But now riding with summer Gloves and hardly on the first setting. But thats thanks to Val H. and thoes amazing Muffs :D :cool

We have the Turcano Urbano muffs ready to go on but it was disappointing to find that the grips are not as effective as they should be, especially knowing that Tim and your grips seem to work as they should.

Talking of muffs, i was thinking of getting some but i have bark busters fitted.
are there any muffs that fit well with these fitted and still give you good access to the switches?

The Turcano Urbanos should fit over the bark busters ok, I think it is the R319's, though if I am wrong I know someone will be able to correct me.

I have the Barkbusters on my 800 and if you remove the small wind deflector(2 small screws) they fit right on.:thumb2

SWMBO finds that even on setting two the level of heat is poor. I tried the bike out today and with the grips on full I was able to hold the grips with bare hands without any problems. If I tried this on my GS or RT I would soon get burnt hands.

Has anyone else found this on the 650/800's?

I've never tried mine with bare hands (why would you?). Level 1 is fine for spring/autumn mornings/evenings, but not quite up to a cold winters day. However, level 2 is just too warm. I've got 1200GS handguards, but thin rallye gloves.

I wouldn't normally either but I wanted to see how they compared to the heated grips on my 1200GS. It showed that on level two the amount of heat being put put is nowhere near where it should be. On level one I don't think you would even notice it with gloves on.

They are not performing as they should be.

I think grips are sensitive to voltage loss through switches and connections.

make sure you have a reading of zero volts across switch when its on etc

not sure what you should get at the grips - my K is showing 8v and they are not that hot.

Too much work at moment to strip it out and look.

Some great US sites on grips especially older bikes which should give you some ideas.

I've been trying to repair some old ones with some fuse wire which seems the right size - harder than you might think !

Just to update, SWMBO anbd I went out for a spin this afternoon, having fitted the Turcano Urbano muffs to her GS and to my surprise the grips reached a far hotter level than when she last rode it. She suffers a bit from reynauds in her hands but after a 20 mile drive her hands were warm to the touch when she took her gloves off and her fingers were nice and pink.

I have no idea why the efficiency of the grips has suddenly taken a big leap forward but I hope it stays that way.

It certainly is! SWMBO is very pleased and she has taken the GS into work for the first time this morning.:thumb2

My mother had Reynauds and I think I'm going the same way. Heated grips only heat the inside of the hand and aren't much good for the fingers, which is why I use muffs, but I think the next purchase might be Gerbing heated gloves.

Tim,

SWMBO used Gerbing gloves in the past and they were great when they worked but they were not very reliable. The importer has replaced them everytime without a quibble and their service has been excellent but the muffs and heated grips are doing the job for her right now.

In reference to the alternator output, the hot hands from oxford have been connected to the rear brake light switch feed..Thats what Honda dealers do so I couldn't imagine that the consumption of very weak grips would be anything near the wattage of the alternator on the 650/800 gs

Does anyone know how the heat settings are controlled. Are there 2 sets of windings in the grips, or is the power controlled by the Canbus? I'm wondering if the settings can be changed.

Having had mine apart there are only two wires going to the heating element - knowing how fiendishly complex the control systems are on these bikes it wouldn't surprise me at all to find that the heat level is software controlled .. That said, it would also not be a great surprise to find that it is a fixed parameter and can't be changed...
