Heated Grips

I firmly agree with PH1969. I have had a fair bit of communication with BMW customer services and my dealer and have been given various bits of spin. The usual " the later grips will not work on earlier bikes", "we are working on a solution" etc etc.

BMW have persistently lied over this issue and their MO is clear. They have put out the corporate line to all dealers and are going to tough it out until all early bikes are out of warranty and the issue fades away. A couple of honest dealers have broken ranks and fitted the later grips and got their knuckles rapped because of it.

Shameful !

Totally agree and my experience too. Complained to BMW Customer Service who suggested I take my bike to supplying dealer to be checked.
Dealer has even admitted they would only be going through the motions and BMW are trying to resolve th issue, albeit very slowly.

I get the impression BMW have a hugh stock of 2013/14 spec heated grips left over since the Gs community kicked off and are now fitting them to new XRs, RR, RS's etc (see their forums, exactly same issues)

Out of order and not good enough on a so called premium brand.

I think that all the shit heated grips from the 2014 MY that they had left over are fitted on the XR as mine are no better than they were on the GSA.

Yep, they are shit on my XR as well. If it's cold, I wear thicker gloves.

I've not managed to lose any sleep over it.

I rode a 2015 WC the other day and the heated grips were the same temperature as the surface of the sun, had to keep turning them off to stop my hands cooking. I reckoned every time I turned them back on a penguin died.

First LC bikes resulted in the deaths of a couple of journalists, BMW denied an issue but miraculously it became a standard fitment the following year. This is how they deal with potential life threatening components no wonder they couldn't give a shit about something as trivial as heated grips that aren't fit for purpose.

Don't believe all you read, I had one of the first April 2013 bikes - the tank slapping nonsense was just that, nonsense - I did over 22,000 miles on mine without the slightest sign of instability - it was all utter bollox.

My RHS grip is much hotter than my LHS grip - if I swap them over will the LHS one now be hotter than the RHS one? :)

You dont want to pay to get the new grips. Setting 1 isn't quite hot enough and setting 2 is far too hot. You end up switching between.... useless. the only time setting 2 is usefull is below zero on the motorway.

Thats true. I reckon the best solution is to fit grip puppies and then you can leave it on setting two.

This has been done to death previously, Bmw know there's a problem & at least they've improved them on the later bikes, I really like my GSLC & the only niggle is the grips, for £200 ish I'm prepared to buy the newer ones, but I'm also looking to change & would have already done so if the grip issue hadn't pissed me right off Bmw
I think in the spirit of customer satisfaction they should write to all owners offering an 'at cost' rework thereby it would cost Bmw zero ££ & would also get us disgruntled stubborn assholes back in the dealers for a look at the newer bikes.

I was out in the Dales on Sunday in temperatures between 2.5 and 7.5C. Once it dropped below about 4C, I couldn't really feel any heat from the left grip and the right wasn't much better.

I paid £250 on the assumption that the grips would be as warm as those on my previous BMW's (2006 K1200S, 2009 R1200GS, 2012 R1200RT), but Allan Jefferies are towing the BMW party line and are stating the grips are within spec i.e. they heat up

WTF should I then be expected to pay £250 for 2015 spec grips or wear even thicker gloves etc. when I've already paid for grips which should have worked properly in the first place?

No I don't work for any publication. Can't believe you are unaware of this story and BMW's avoidance of the issue or the fact they altered the front end design before delivering the 2013 bikes.
Perhaps you're just one of those blinkered riders who only rate 'their' bike. This gets away from the point of the thread and BMW's reluctance to accept responsibility for a poorly designed part of what is a good bike. Paying over £200 for an option that doesn't work and having to buy expensive gloves to use your 'do it all' bike in cold weather is not reasonable. And why do some dealers offer a 2015 upgrade option when others say their incompatible?

I am fully aware of it because my bike was one of the bikes that was delayed and I know exactly what they did to the 'front end' and it wasn't a re-design in any shape or form.

However, the GS/GSA-LC still one of the best all-rounders that money can buy....go on any other bike forum and you will find issues with all bikes..:hide

Totally agree, but known issues like this shouldn't even have been given the chance to rise up.. REALLY should have been sorted quietly in the first place..
But I still really like my GSWC..

Agreed and if it wasn't for the wingers and complainers even less would be done about the faults. Keep up the good work folks.

Have you or anyone tried demanding a refund and returning the grips as NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE? Its difficult to ask for refund on TE bikes as its not priced separately but if you have paid separately surely like any other goods purchased they can be returned for refund if not satisfactory. (then buy 2015 grips with refund!)

The problem is that the description in the brochures etc. simply states "heated grips". It doesn't specifically state that their purpose is to keep the riders hands warm in cold weather. So, as they're grips and they heat up, they meet their description
