Heated hand grips

Out today on my 2015 GSA, 3 deg C, winter gloves, grips on low were too hot, had to keep switching them off.

Not fit for purpose then, I'd get your lawyers onto BMW immediately! :)

This is to expand on my post 316 and confirm that grips are 2015's put on a 2014 and they work..and I know some people are seeing their dealers tomorrow and you have some backup..... :beerjug:

Finally got out on the road in "New Jersey" . The temperature was 43 degrees F and the sun was shining and roads were dry.. Purposely did not take a temp reading so just wanted to take and ride a "feel" how the grips were. Rode for a half hour about 20 miles of varied roads, red lites etc. I had lightweight gloves on ( Multi layered leather) but gloves I would use in spring.. Grips tooo hot on high and I had to turn to low.. At a longish stop light couldn't really keep my hands on the grips when on high ( no wind cooling them) ...

On paperwork below part numbers are the numbers for the 15's ie after build date of August 2014 .. The two temp readings are left and right grips AFTER the ride... I got 161 on post 316.. [email protected] contact info

Guess I imagined all this... As mentioned many times before... Wiring part numbers the same....handlebar numbers the same.... No need to upgrade software to 2015 specs....Got all the BS from bmw customer service they won't work ... Dealer got ok to put them on they work! And covered under warranty ..Have done multiple rides.... Friend with a 14 GSA also had it done at another dealer... His work also? Would they have done this if they really felt they " were fit for purpose" I doubt it...Only caveat is this is USA ..not England but I doubt much difference in parts.... I hope no one wakes me up :-)

Got my heated grips replaced a few weeks ago. It didn´t do the trick. Yesterday the bike (GS LC 2013) has got a software upgrade and this morning with a temp of 5,5°C my hands were bearely feeling the heat at 50% and they were nice and warm at 100%. I wear Alpinestars Tech Road GTX winter gloves.
I hope my heated grips will perform well in subzero temperatures.

I have been watching this thread and although my Grips do work they seem to come and go if that makes sense red hot to not hot enough !
Any way i shall see what happens when i mention it at its 6K service

Do you know all the chords, do you make your guitar sing and are you saving for a Ferrari ? :augie

BMW GB's customer services department told me there's nothing wrong with my grips so I must be imagining my cold hands when riding their flagship touring bike with the heated grips on. I'm riding through France next week so have bodged some muffs to keep my hands warm. What would happen if the heater in their cars wasn't hot enough to heat the car sufficiently? Would they tell the driver/occupants that there's noting wrong? I intend buying replacements and will vote with my wallet next time I change bikes which in the past has been often.

Hmmmm, mine went from too hot on the low setting when the air temp was 3C to barely noticeable two days later when the air temp was 10C.

Does the ambient air temperature affect the heat output?

After a chat with Pidcocks about the problems with the grips of which other customers have also complained about to themselves they have agreed to try a set of the later grips on my bike to see if they will work or not.

They had to be ordered from Germany as there is no stock in the UK, it will take 10 days for them to arrive !!

Any news yet?

Still waiting, no stock of the right hand grip in Germany. Was due in on the 31st March in Germany then about 10 days to get it across to England !!! not quite sure postal/courior service they use, I think it must be pigeon post.

I will keep you posted on any updates.

Took a new 15 demonstrator out for a 100 mile jaunt today to see how it stacked up against my Sept 13 TE.

Confirmed, without a shadow of a doubt, the heated grips on the new model are vastly superior to the ones on mine. On one dot, they were as hot if not slightly hotter than mine on 2 dots and on full power they got very hot, hot enough to make me have to switch them off or back down to one dot.

At first the sales guy said there was no difference but when I pointed out that there were two different part numbers, he became how should we say, "pleasant but evasive". I reckon all the dealers know of this issue but are towing the BMW party line.

The Gear Assist was a hoot though and if I could fit one on my bike I would. As for everything else, well the Frozen Blue colour is shit and does nothing for the looks, Alpine white looks tons better and as for the heavier crank and steering damper, I would never have known. My engine does rattle more when hot though, it is as if the valves adjustment is way out.

But back to the heated grip issue, well us early adopters have been shafted !

keeping you waiting aren't they ? just as well its not a spare part to get your bike working again …a month to get something in stock ???

I had my suspicions when the the service guy at my local told me the 15 grips won't work on the 14 bikes. Some twat high up said the software won't switch the grips on because the current draw is too much. I know something about software so I would like to see the schematics. Told me it is bollocks that people on the forums have had theirs changed for a 15 and it works. I said I'm not happy with the grips. Measured mine at a paltry 32 deg C. My reply is that is not even a summer day is South Africa. I would really like the fucking things changed as this is very fucking irritating. I'm watching this with interest so I can go and rub the shit under their noses. Fucking arseholes. So if the one grip fails what are they going to fit to the bike? A 15 or a 14 heated grip and how would they know if the part numbers are the same. Don't sell shit and tell the customer is smell like roses.

Well give me the blokes email and I will send him a copy of the above sheet that shows they put 2015 grips (part numbers) on my 2014 GSA and Bill Gates didn't reprogram the software!!!!

Also good friend had his done at another dealer... Hint The corporate owned one in NYC

Went out last weekend with medium weight gloves on about 48 degrees.. and couldn't keep the grips on high heat!!! had to even sut them off now and again and put on low... What a enjoyable difference... Only cavaet this is US but i assume stuff is pretty much the same

Had my dealer install the part number grips that Bikerboy108 had put on Saturday. Rode into work today, 34°F outside, and now know how heated grips are supposed to work! I had on my BMW Motorsports Winter gloves and had to turn the switch to low they were so hot. The low setting is warmer than the high setting with the old grips. Very happy with the outcome.

Yes I saw that, he said it was done under warranty as well. Wonder when BMW UK are going to stop lying to us.

What do you think the issue is?
1. This isn't a big enough problem to bother about
2. It'll cost too much to fix
3. A recall is bad press
4. Ok not a recall, just an advisory is still bad press
5. They don't need to do anything as you'll still buy another BMW

Can you really think they'll suddenly just say "ok, tell you what, you were right we were wrong, sorry"

BMW should be big enough to sort this out, it would cost them bugger all in the scheme of things.

When something is wrong and a manufacturer admits to it and puts things right, it is worth far more for their reputation, than the small amount of money it would cost them.

These bikes cost a lot of money and although no manufacturer is perfect, there are an increasing number of tempting alternatives to the GS, especially as an "on road bike".

I give you the 2015 Ducati Multistrada as an example.
