Guys, I recently had an intermittent ABS fault on my front brake of my 03 1150 ADV, I purchased a new sensor and replaced accordingly.

I still have however the warning triangle permanently illuminated, and the ABS light giving 4 pulses on start up, then flashing on and off.

Now this is the issue, I think I need to reset my ABS, as it is telling me (I think) that I have 1 ABS circuit down, but I cannot reset the ABS as my round connector does not have the right number of pins?

Can someone help me on this please, as I cannot find any reference to resetting the ABS when you do not have pin 2?

Thanks in advance for you help, as I’m stumped on this one.

Cheers

Paul

Just a thought, is your right handguard fouling your brake lever ? cos this can be detected as a fault on your abs.

Tried that

I have done the obvious ones, front brake lever, fluid levels, rear brake microswitch, I have not changed the battery as this is working OK.

find someone with a GS911 gizmo and read the fault-code then reset and see if it returns.

Hi Paul,
HTH
I guess this should answer your questions:

However, how's your battery?

Bite the bullet and take it to a dealer and have it plugged in :nenau

Hi, have you set your air gap on your new sensor? Also, this might sound funny but put a new rear bulb in. Good luck with this. If you're near Nottingham I do a mobile diagnostic for BMW's from £20. Thanks Carl

The solution to my ABS issues- a cautionary tale

When coming back from my east europe Tour last year, I took a bang on the front abs sensor while in deepest Romania.

The result of this was from time to time the ABS fault light would not go out leaving me with residual braking

I purchased a new sensor, then because is the newer type ABS (03) onwards, I put the bike into Wollaston to have the ABS reset.

Once there, I was told that they could not diagnose the issue and that it would not reset (£80 for this)

Due to time, I rebooked the bike to have an in-depth fault find with the techs.

On going to the garage, I was told that the ABS unit needed replacing, at a cost of £1400

As my bike was being bought round to me, the parts guy asked if the fault was intermittent and I said not for a while. He then told me that at the moment the abs was working.

I took the bike and abused the brakes on the way home, but all was OK?

Reading the paperwork when home, faults were listed as:

Front abs sensor
Rear bulb
Rear sensor

The rear bulb and sensor were historical, whilst only the front had been current.

When talking to BMW tech recently who wanted to remain anonymous his
explanation was:

The tech these days cannot diagnose my brain power, only by computer.

When the bike first went to the garage, the tech failed to clear the fault by not fully breaking and making the connections on the abs unit (which needs the tank off)

Thus the historal data would not clear.

The rear faults were attibuted to me checking what was going on myself!

When it went to the garage the second time, the tank was off and it was done properly, and thus now working ABS

Apart from the misdiagnosis from BMW and 2 visits resulting in a £190 bill, I have also bought a used ABS unit from my pals bike which only had 20k on which cost me £250 which now sits on my shelf

So in short £ just under £500 spent on a miss diagnosis

So the moral of the story is, challenge what the garage does, because it's the apprentices using the computer!

Not the most impressive tale
