HELP - Gear position potentiometer / malfunction

Having problems with gear display on LCD screen.
Have replaced the potentiometer for a new one today but problem still there. Have no Neutral showing and gear is either missing, random flash or even wrong gear showing.
The side stand switch seems fine as it will not allow me to start bike when down.
I can only start bike with the clutch depressed which seems to show that that switch also is wotking.

(I had problems with it last year but removed the potentiometer and gave it a clean and a squirt of contact cleaner and it was fine for ages)

Any tips? What else can I look at / test? I don't have any bike specific diagnostic tool

I'm suffering with this as well but in my case it's only after the bike is started from cold......after a few minutes riding and a bit of activity with the gear lever it settles down and works fine. On starting it doesn't seem to be able to tell the difference between 1st, 2nd Nuetral and 3rd, once I get past 3rd it knows where it is.

It started like that for me too.... and it ended as it is now.
I don't know of anything else in this circuit. Or indeed how to check it.

You need a GS911,
When replacing certain parts or sensors, the previously learned (adapted) values, need to be cleared and in some cases relearned (such as gear position sensor).

As above reset adaptations then ride the bike to re learn the gear positions.
If you do not have a GS911 you could try disconnecting the battery for five minutes then go for a ride .

If that does not work I'll have to take to dealers for them to clear the faults / adaptations.

Hi

I had problems with on mine, a few years ago.

I first brushed all the crud off, and cleaned both ends of the connectors, and then sprayed everything with WD40. That worked for a while, but then the part was removed, cleaned again, and reset using the BMW programme via computer. That cleared all the problems.

If you have replaced the unit, and everything is clean, that as per previous replies, I think it will need resetting via a dealer etc.

I bought mine from here, have had it for a couple of years now and is well worth it if you are serious about maintaining your bike IMHO
Their price for a USB/Bluetooth enthusiast version is £274 not sure about delivery.

The bad news is that it still does not show neutral. It knows the gears but if "flickers" to next gear when depressing the clutch. I've ran it up and down the gears several times after battery disconnected

That looks interesting and gives me a clear idea of its process.
The thing that is confusing me its when I depress the clutch the values fluctuate (it shows a different gear, usually the one above)
Got the bike in neutral and coasting and it showed 6th gear. ??????as the spreed dropped it showed different gears. The voltage should have not changed.
Anyone know the hourly rate of a BMW dealer?

am I correct in the fact that these bikes DO NOT have a separate neutral sensor anywhere?
Just in case that is interfering with the gear potentiometer

The gear position is via the one potentiometer. The 911 is needed to tell the ECU where each gear is on the potentiometer output. Neutral is just another gear with electronics doing the engine start/run calculations.

Maybe the clutch microswitch is not operating correctly - casing the flickering etc. Disconnect it and see what happens. You will now only be able to start the engine in neutral.

Then decide if to splash out on a GS911....

My clutch microswitch has not worked for years. TBH its never been an issue. Just disconnect and see how it behaves.

You can then start only in neutral but its not a biggie.

Thanks to Bendy toy and any others who have helped so far

OK. I disconnected the clutch lever switch and bike would not start. This confused me for a while. I shorted the switch plug and it then started fine.
I cleaned the switch and plug and it seems to be working well.
IF, there is a voltage feedback to the ECU and this is causing the display flickring, I don't know.
(possible the bike wouldn't start because the bike does not know it is in neutral, form the original gear position problem.)
Looks like I will have to splash out on a GS911
