Got a Garmin V off a very nice man from this webforum, and he had preloaded maps of the UK onto handset. It works marvellously. Except for last night - and it had been working brilliantly when I used it earler in the week.
Was on a trip last night - in the car on business. Getting close to Glenrothes the thing froze. It just stopped working. Switched it off, and then a few minutes later switched it back on, and nothing. Had to go into the police station where a pc gave me directions to where I wanted to go.

Meeting lasted about 2 hours.

Came out to car, switched Garmin on and tried to set it up so that it would take me home. It kind of worked after a fashion. But subtle differences had creeped in, like:
usually when entering a roundabout it would tell you which junction to take off, and show you with a nice arrow outline of what was to happen, but not now it just says turn right, or left, certainly with the arrow pointing in the intended direction;
or at motorways it would say "on slip road", or something similar, now it just is saying "turn left onto M8".
Yes it did get me home, but not in the manner that I have become accustomed to.
I have tried to get rid of the data in the handset by taking the batteries out, so that I can then reload what I want to reload, but it seems not to want to kill itself off. How do I clear what is in the handset and then reload the stuff back into the handset?
I know its simple, and I am a numpty for asking, and I will get all sorts of dogs abuse, but hey, that is what being part of this forum is all about... TIA

Rev .... a sat nav ? I thought you just requested a star to be sent to guide you on yer way .
Sorry, cant help you on the technology stuff.

I think all the satnav experts are huddling in thier tents doon at the foot o the country at the moment

First - a disclaimer - I've never even touched a GPS V, so have no experience of them.

However, from experience with other Garmin GPSes (SPIII & NavII), the data in the cards (I think yours is internal memory) is overwritten immediately by any reload. My 1Gb card could have 900Mb of maps loaded onto it, but if I loaded a 1Mb map onto it, the entire previously saved mapset would be overwritten.

I am assuming your 'very nice man' sold you the mapping software with the unit and that, thus far, you've left in in the box and ignored it (as I would have ;)) because you already had the maps loaded into the unit. If so, it's time to load them onto your PC and then reload them into your unit. Hopefully, that'll sort out whatever corruption has affected the current load by overwriting it.

Mike:)
