Holy sh*t!!!

Thanks Guys.

I've sent them an Email.

I'd just been belting along and braked for a roundabout as soon as I released the brake there was a loud bang and the back end dropped a few inches. Fourtunatly the shock wedged in the frame stopping the wheel hitting the mudguard.

Scary moment though.

Too many pies:augie

Glad you're Ok though:thumb2

The offending shock

 I'd guess that they didn't heat treat the mount after welding it on, and so there was a difference in strength just where you don't want it

shocking:eek:
glad you are ok rob.
wasnt the one you had on when ,were on the east mids rideout was it?:augie

that looks like the rubber bush was WAY TOO thin

and not allowing rotational movement!

Hence the break at the weld junctures!

Either that or weld procedures are NOT being carried out correctly?

Finally got round to sending the shock off to Hagon. Posted on Saturday morning. Just got home from work to find a brand new shock waiting for me with a covering letter apologising for the inconvenience. Bloody fast response considering the shock was out of warranty. Certainly cannot knock their customer service.

Now do I trust a Hagon shock again?

NO is the simple answer :)

Think about the potential consequences if it goes again.

Every "bang, clunk etc from the rear end will have you thinking the shock is going again -not particularly conducive to relaxing riding :eek

Sell it on Ebay or similar and invest in something with a better reputation.

It'll be fine just fit it and ride it! I mean it didn't have ya off last time did it? Just scared the poop outta ya???

Check it often for any rust in the weld joint (which may be an indication of early failure)

Hagon

Hi Rob
If you dont trust it Ill buy it off you, I have clocked 180000 on a BMW original shock and two replacement Hagons, and the 2nd is still going strong.

Rob.
More or less the same thing happened to myself on my GS, although I didnt actually hear it go pop. Whilst up on a motorbike ramp(For service work), and spinning the rear wheel, I/we could hear the drive shaft/gearbox spider hitting the swingarm. A quick check of the spider etc proved that the swing arm was central (We first thought it may not be). Much head scratching followed until someone shone a torch upto the top end of the Hagon shock, and we realised how lucky id been. !!
Thanks god for that frame cleat thats all i can say.
I was 60 miles from home at the time but as the shock was quite new, and under guarantee, we rang Hagons who agreed to replace the item after I had it welded up to get me home. A replacement did arrive and I did send the old one back for inspection, but havent heard anything yet. (That was 18 months ago, so i dont think i will)
The replacement has been ok, but i did check it every ride after that for a while !!!
