My horn doesn't work - It is a NN horn that was working ok.

If I connect it across the battery, it works OK.
But not on the button - using a multimeter I see a one volt change at the horn leads when button pressed with the horn disconnected.
I am not experienced with canbus

Any suggestions please?

Phil

My guess would be that the higher current draw of the (Stebel horn I imagine) horn is making the canbus think there's a short circuit and shuts it down. I got around this by wiring in two Magnums direct to the battery and having a relay triggered from the existing horns wiring.

Beemerman - Understood - But ---It has been working for two years, 'till now.

MR Pastry -- ???? Of course.

Dirty connectors? Have you put the OEM horn back on to see if that still works? I tried a single Stebel for a while and that worked OK at first off the canbus (I bought the proper converter cable from NN) then it packed up. I didn't investigate further just went straight to a new twin setup and put a relay in.I assumed the horn itself had broke so didn't look into anything else.

Yeah! I have just had it all to bits and checked/cleaned everything.

I too used a NN extension lead. And the horn works across the battery!
Unfortunately the original horn is no more.

Ok this was on my 1150, but my stebel stopped working, It worked when connected direct to a battery, a meter showed voltage when the button was pressed when the horn was on the bike. but no beeeeeep. eventually traced to a bad earth connection from the horn, I remade the earth connection and all is well..

I glad you said that - Solidstate - 'cos I would have to ask.

So tell me more 'bout "ZFE" !!

Does the horn work in the old-fashioned way? ie. by earthing one side of the horn via the button?

Phil

The ZFE unit is German for the "Central Vehicle Electronics" box and is situated under the tank beside the "Engine Management" box or BMSK. The ZFE unit controls functions such as lights, indicators horn etc. Press the horn push button and a contact is made to the input on the box. There is an associated output that sends a voltage to the horn and the other wire on the horn is connected to earth. The current is limited by an electronic fuse in the box. This is how the 1200 GS doesn't have any fuses.

The wiring diagram is available on the R1200 GS info website.
