How many R850GS's on this site?

I've got one as well. 2000 on an X plate, yellow and silver. Great bike, 60k on it at the moment and still going strong. Have just had the throttle cables replaced for the first time, and while it was in I had an F800R as a loan bike. It was a feisty little number, and new, with just a couple of thousand on it. But when I went back to the GS there was no comparison, it really reminded me of what a quality item the GS is.

R850GS

I too have an R850GS IV had it for 2 and a half years now and I have put over 30,000 miles on it since the day I got it. Its taken me to the bottom of Croatia to the middle of Norway (had to turn back run out of time) and back to Aberdeen time and time again the only problem iv had with it other than drowning it was the starter motor broke. It would benefit from another gear I think but it’s a great bike I love it and will never sell it. Sproggy were did you get your engine and front end done as my bike is looking a bit work as I drive it all year round its starting to look unloved. Ill post pictures when I get back on land. Nice to know there is others out there
According to http://howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/bmw_r850gs there is only 60 licensed bikes left in Brittan. Should start saving them they will be gone soon.

Hey up guys, just wondered if you all could give me some pointers.

I'm looking at buying an 850 but it has been fitted with a 1150 engine.

size wise, how different is the 850 from the 1150, the 850 is the twin head light one fromt he pictures.

ANything I should look out for or shoudl I just find a 1150 or 850 which has not been converted?

any info greatly received.

The 850 is the smaller-engined version of the 1100. Size-wise (physically) they are identical.

The differences between the 850 and 1100 are engine and final drive gearing and that's about it. The differences between the 850/1100 and the 1150 are more extensive - different instruments, screen, top fairing, headlights, 6 speed (rather than 5 speed) gearbox on the 1150 - loads of updates. The 1150 is heaver but not a lot.

I've no experience of an 1150 engine in an 850 but there's no particular reason why you should avoid it if it's been done well, although I guess it still has a 5-speed gearbox rather than the 1150's 6-speeder. Best make sure it also has an 1150/1100 final drive otherwise I reckon it would be under-geared. Otherwise it sounds like an interesting prospect.

Thank you for the comments.

I will ask the questions and see what replies I get back. One of the main reasons I am considering it is we might swap my RSV for it which makes it a lot easier.

He had told me the gearbox has a rebuild last year.

The more I look into the GS the more I want one, a little sad hey :) need to grow up a little so my wife tells me :rob

Got any pics?

Personally I wouldn't touch it. It sounds like it has been fecked about with beyond all recognition.

The 850 was the smaller capacity version of the 1100 and should have a big rectangular headlight. I'm guessing it's had the TT twin headlight fitted and not the later bog eyes from the 1150.

The 850 isn't much less powerful than the 1100 or the 1150 and is a smoother motor imho. A guy I know in Crewe has a minter and it is soooooo smooth.

What's your RSV worth. You can pick up an extremely nice 1100 for less than 4k. There were apparently only 2000 850's brought into the UK, so they are a rare find! Not as sought after, so tend to be cheaper when they do come up.

I'd say this bike is worth no more than 2k as a well fecked about example with questionable history.

I've been told its a 6 speed box and he has converted the rear tail light from a 1200

As for my bike, its worth about 3k but as I fancy a GS, happy to let it go for a little less.
I'm only advertising it locally at the moment like Gumtree http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/aprilia-rsv1000r-cheap-new-shape/104956585

If I can find a GS from around my bike value I will be a very happy chap but its looking a little slim at the moment, hense checking this 850 conversion out.

Thanks guys for the comments, it's really helping

I have some images fo the proposed bike. On checking it has 9 owners too, mines only as 3 including me.

any why, here you go, someone might remember it too, anygood?

It has 1150 front end - beak, headlights, screen and instruments. Missing spark plug covers and tank badges. They're 1150 forks, too. The mirrors are non-original - standard ones are round. A 6-speed 'box means 1150 paralever too AFAIK. Not much of the 850 left other than the reg number......

If I was in the market I'd want to know why the entire front end of the bike has been replaced because I'd suspect a heavy front end crash - without that happening I don't know why anyone would bother swapping forks even if they swapped to an 1150 beak etc.

Bit of a mystery, but certainly no longer an 850GS!

worth postins a picture as I wasn't aware of all that. humm, I may ask more questions.

Can you get a cut and shut on a bike? :):blast

It would probably be wrong to assume the worst without more information, but with that amount of work having been done you'd certainly want to know why before you committed your hard-earned cash. Or your Mille.

That looks like a whole 1150GS, nothing on it is 1100/850GS

Run away, unless you get to the bottom of it

Walk Away :rob thats an 1150 :augie and not even a nice one,
there has been some nice Gs's for sale be patient the right one will come along
even if you buy a rougher, well maintained one with genuine history :comfort

Yep, that's about as much 850 as my Airhead :blast

100% 1150. other than the seat, tank and tail (which were the same on the 850 as the 1100/1150, there's no 850 there

Frame, Gearbox, Swingarm, Engine, Front end, Fairing, Front mudguard etc etc etc.

Run Forrest, RUN!!!!!!!!:thumb

I think I am staying clear of it. Just spotted a cheap 1150 on ebay, just asked the question to see if he wants another bike :)
You never know hey.
