Huggered Up

By the way it is probably that we get up early and get on with things rather than have a series of 'meetings' that we get things done !,

You appear to be in a rush to attend a meeting, as that makes little real sense. :D

its holding the rubber sheet in place mate - that's the problem - not sure if I can bond it as the inside of the `armadillo` is very convoluted.

Mark. Tiger seal from car factors is great for bonding rubber to steel. You could always consider a heavy layer of stone chip sprayed on it would give protection and act as sound killer.

What about a series of slots down the edges that it could slide into and then strategically placed pop rivets. I am sure that the correct 'contact' style adhesive would be surprisingly capable of holding any liner in place. As in my pm I think the liner would enable you to have as many slits as you want as it would act as a binder to hold it all together.

Good idea pal but I could easily over engineer it - I feel the bonding idea might be best or a coat of stone chip as long as it seals any cracks - or I might Tig them. I`ll see...........

I was thinking that but it would have to be able to a) dry and b) be thick enough to seal any cracks. At this time this is looking like the best quickest cheapest option (not that what I do is `cheap` as such but the perfect solution of a fitted plastic liner is looking very expensive and time consumming and possibly not necessary)

email sent

Hi Mark, I have sent you an email with a few images of a prototype idea that I have cobbled together. I cannot post images on here.

Got them pal and yes great idea - I`m going to continue with the `armoured` or armadillo concept for now but yes it may prove very handy for the liner

amazing - just amazing - where does the time go

Guys, I spent over 7 hours on this today - I only stopped to pee - I just can`t beleive it. Anyway, I have gone as far as I can with the `concept` - I`ve now mounted the bracket under the hugger itself and found 2 excellent M10 mounting points on the wheel flange. I`m also going to put a further bracket at the front of the hugger which will go to another anchor point on the torsion bar (thin bar that runs along the top of the shaft drive casing).

My day has been taken totally up trying to get the geometry right on the bracket :blast - you can`t see the bracket

This is number six, you wanna see the pile of the other 5.................

Hugger itself 2mm aluminium bracket 2mm stainless - bracket is a bit heavy duty but I`m going on the side of caution as the last thing I want is a bracket failure because I`ve tried to save some money...........

I`m going to Tig the hugger it to make it waterproof and to retain the shape. I`ve shortened the sides as requested but personally I think the longer sides are better??????? I am also going to spray the underside with stone chip to deaden any noise and further waterproof the underneath.

So, generally speaking, this is about as far as I can go with a prototype so do you think it will work? Shall I continue or are you guys happy to wait for a `normal` one to come along?

Longer sides will work better and defo look better. Would look better without the flat top? Enough clearance for knoblies?

I won't be buying one (don't have a WC), just sat bored in a traffic jam :)

I will photo the mounting points tmoz mate - same as that hugger photo you sent me - very solid and much better than my original mounting points - the other one will be forward of the hugger and more of a 'belt and braces' to make sure it ain't gonna drift. Price I have no idea about but will be about mid range I guess

Guys, here`s the next step - its just to prove the shape thats all but I think I am getting nearer the `hugger` shape don`t you think?

I do feel that I will have to Tig it up (which isn`t the end of the world) but I`m starting to get quite pleased witht he radical design,

Can you see what I mean by `layered` and `Armadillo-like`

What do we think? Load of arse? Too radical to be any good? Or `Radical-R-Us` ????

I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there will be amny people who don`t like this but I`m starting to like the way this is going...............

I think its looking pretty good, personally I would like to see the sections curve too but it would definitely be a seller. maybe smaller sections would achieve more curve. but as work in progress looking good mate.

fanks mate - its bloody slow going.............

Friday update

Well, 12 hours SOLID logged in the last 2 days - I`m getting fekk all done at work and I`m only stopping to pee. Fist photo is me at my desk using the design software. I was wasting too much time going from the desk to the bike so as you can see I moved the bike inside and right up to my desk.

Just about got the geometry right on the bracket (that is what has taken 12 hours to do......) and I`ve designed a bracket to hold it from the front.

Photo`s show you were I am at and also the 2 good mounting points I am usung for the main bracket.

Sorry about the spelling mistakes - I really haven`t got the time...............(Nuts is a hard task master)

I`m in again tmoz to try an ali bracket and to confirm the geometry and to get something ready for Tigging on Monday.

This has been the hardest thing I`ve ever done. Once I`ve done this I`m going to take some time off lads.

All for a hugger lol - next time guys if one of you wants a hugger I`ll send you the money to buy one so I can take the time off :-)

Superb job Mark. I wonder if it could be sprayed with a thick coating of something like a 2 part epoxy in semi Matt black. It would have the strength of the alloy with the stealth look of a moulding. Let me know when you need a tester

I wonder if satin black vinyl car wrap would go on and form to the 'scales'?

Thanks mate - I`m kinda all obsessed about it now - can`t stop thinking about it, its got to be perfect or I`m going to be gutted - got a deflection issue with it but am trying an ali brace tmoz..........

and yeah good idea about the epoxy black but I`m not at that point to think about it yet...........

thanks for offering to be a tester.

Just edited my reply to add satin black vinyl car wrap as a possible finish. Looking online it would appear that high quality wrap will go over uneven surfaces.
