Idling problem

Have a problem with the XCountry. It starts fine hot or cold but once off fast idle it is hesitant and cuts out. It also surges a lot on part throttle.

If it didn't have FI I'd have said it was the pilot jet as the symptoms are similar to a blocked PJ.

I've changed the plugs and cleaned the ISC but no difference. Throttle body was generally clean.

I disconnected the TPS and that just made the idling worse.

To keep it running when waiting for the lights to change etc, I hold it on fast idle with the throttle, which keeps it going but it does run rough.

Once moving and off part throttle it is fine even at low RPM. MPG is still good in the 75-80mpg range.

It's been like this for around 2 weeks and the recent drop in temps hasn't made a difference.

Any ideas!?

Open and close throttle fully and slowly 3 times.
Ignition off.

Yes, did that (the ISC). It wasn't too mucky as I had cleaned it about 20k miles earlier.

Yes, always do that - no throttle when starting as the ECU has fast idle on start-up and that fast idle works fine with no rough running. I also let the dash finishing doing it's thing when turning on the ignition.

Yes, tried that too as I've had the battery out a few times for fault finding.

Not that I found the found the fault of course.

Good video, will check that but it looks like it applies to US bikes where the charcoal fuel evaporation cannister has been removed and the pipes blocked off. Still worth checking though thanks.

Had a good look at that this morning by taking the throttle body off. It looks like that inlet from the evap cannister is not drilled on my bike.

However, all was not lost, as in prompting me to take the TB off I could see that the rubber manifold from the TB to the head was split where it joins the TB. I put some tape around it to see if that was indeed the cause of the problem it does seem to be.

It now idles properly so I'll be off to BMW for a new manifold next.

The general way of finding a leak like that is to spray WD40 onto it whilst it's ticking over, if the revs rise there's a leak

Yes, that is a good idea. Carb cleaner also works but that makes the engine slow down.

I have to be honest and state that I just never suspected an air leak as it only affected part throttle. Perhaps the split closed up at larger throttle openings.
