IGNITION PICK UPS - HALL EFFECT

Hi, hope this info is of help to someone.
I normally run my bike through the winter but draw the line when it snows (in March!!). After a few weeks of inactivity, I went to start the bike and guess what? It wouldnt start. Not only this, the fuel pump kept kicking in and out and when I took the plugs out, they intermittently started to fire!! This is obviously without the engine running but with ignition in run mode. To cut a long story short, I managed to diagnose this down to one of the ignition pick ups - these control the fuel pump as well as the plugs!

BMW price £170.00 plus vat!! After numerous searches , I discover that Honeywell make a compatible sensor. This makes me very happy. However, what makes me very unhappy is that no one in the UK stocks them. As I am in the (electrical) trade, you can believe me when I say I tried. The only company that stocks them (for sale as single units) is Newark in the states at approx 15 quid each plus shipping. Then I find they are on 8 weeks back order!!

Enter CY sensors, an Asian company, based in Germany who manufacture their own compatible sensors. 25 euros for 2 sensors, delivered 4 days later - result!!
2 hours work to wire and fit, a couple of pounds worth of shrink tubing and mini crimps and job done!
The only disadvantage is that the company doesnt take card payments and require payment by transfer.

Incidentally, if anyone would like them fitting to the original mounting plate, I may consider doing it for them.

On another note, anyone got any experience repainting the engines on these things? The paint finish is crap and not up yo UK winters. Any (sensible)advice would be appreciated.

Hall Sensors = You mean the pieces that are in plastic holders?

So you replaced with removing the old ones from there and put the new ones in?

Can you give us the web page where you ordered them?

This maybe excellent cheap way repairing it.

Cheers, Margus :beerjug:

When mine went i orderd 2 sensors fron newark $24 but were on backorder for 70 days :( so went two bmw & paid up for a complete unit .
One week later they arrived from the us but by the time tax & delivery was added the cost was $86 :eek (£50) may repair the old unit as a spare

What a good idea
its a pity that you do not have a small stock of the back plates for different models that you could have made up.
Failing that make friends with a BMW tech, and offer him a pint for everyone he gives you
does anyone have access to discarded back plates
I would certainly have one as a spare

£150.01 new .

£47 second hand from james sherlock .

The only difference between 1100 and 1150 is the plug, plus there are two types of 1150 units, same plugs, but the wiring looms are different. But they are interchangable  confused ? .

Just remembered - a lot of hall sensor problems on the 1100 is the loom, inadequate heat insulation on the loom where it runs over the engine allows the wiring to breakdown.
They changed for the 1150, but i've still had a couple with loom problems

Well said, Steptoe, of the 6 I've had in for repair because of sensor 'failure', 5 were because of a wiring fault, I've a suspicion the dealers are just fitting a replacement assembly rather than looking for the actual fault, hence the belief that the sensors are unreliable.

Got about 10 new ones on the shelf at home. Sensors that is. Takes about a week for motobins shipment to 'ere, so I'd suspect the same the other way. If yer caught short send an email.
