Indicators stuck on

Riding to work this morning my right hand indicators came on when I used the front brake and would not cancel.

Putting on the hazard warners had no effect, ie the left hand indicators did not come on at the same time; nor did switching off and restarting.

In the end I had to remove front and back indicator bulbs, but the instrument panel repeater light is still flashing showing that current is going to the sockets.

Put the left ones on and they work, but they will not always cancel immediately., sometimes it takes a few pushes of the switch.

Any idea what's going on? I would have suspected a dodgy switch were it not for the weird front brake situation. Maybe it's canbus related, in which case is there any way I can reset it before riding home in the dark tonight?

Probably related to the switchgear. A stuck microswitch telling the indicators to come on. The CANBUS normally has an inbuilt counter which self-cancels the indicators after about 15 flashes, unless the switch is held (or stuck on).

Probably worth a squirt of WD40 on the indicator switch (best done via the red 'straw' supplied with the can) and then operate it a few times.

I had indicators that used to come on by themsleves on a brand new bike. Indicator switches were changed under warranty, and been fine for the last 18 months+.

Frikkin dangerous in London when you indicate left, and manouvre left to find at the last minute the bike has decided to inicate right... Scared the shit out of me due to confused traffic - was close to getting munched.

I love this site, a guy at work in London has a problem with his bike and the the first reply he gets is from Australia :thumb2 , good ere int it.

Same problem on my '05 bike in May, when it was just out of warranty. Dealers replaced the switchgear and arranged with BMW for it to be done as a goodwill gesture. No problems since. Good luck

Thanks everyone. I'm waiting for a reply from the dealer regarding replacing the switches as a goodwill gesture being as the warranty expired in June.

Meanwhile it's dried up here in London since this morning's downpour and I've just been out to put the bulbs back in.

Seems to be working OK now. Fingers crossed for the journey home!

I had a similar problem with my old GS, i had put the hazards on whilst parked, then they refused to switch off:(

I rode to the dealers parked outside went in to get somebody to take a look, when we went out to take a look, all was fine:rolleyes:, no faults showed on the GT1 and the fault never recurred while i had the bike.

Good Luck

Happened to my 05 1200 as well, replaced under warranty (both sides).

They all do that Sir this is not a known problem with the 1200GS said BMW Customer service in Bracknell

Ha! Strangely that is more or less what Canon BMW said when I rang them today. When I brought up the posts here on the subject the guy said, and I kid you not, "Oh you can find anything on the internet, that Elvis is alive or that the world is flat".

What kind of half-decent BMW dealer hasn't heard of this site?
