Is 96bhp enough?

my dealer has said they have not sold as many 1050s as they were expecting to.

I think KTM missed a trick with the 1050

They should have put the 1050 engine and wizardry into the 990 Adventure type chassis/bodywork/wheels (with minor upgrades), with fully adjustable WP suspension etc and kept the 1190 & R, plus 1290 to take on the GS/GSA/Exp and the bike 1100cc+ Super Adv type tourers

With a trick 1050 - offroad 990 type they could take on the new Africa Twin et al and appeal to the more offroad riders

Ditching the 990 Adv has been a mistake, at the bottom cc end of the range:blast

Ktm needs a SMT replacement, possibly the 1290 super dukeGT will be this.

I too can't see the 1050 being produced for much longer.

No doubt in a few years folk will snap up used models as it will be the must have bike to have, that wasn't appreciated at the time.

I think its more than that, the 1050 is only 5kg lighter than the 1190, they both suffer from the same electronics, they have same wheels frame etc etc, and if you only want 96bhp you can switch the 1190 down to that, the only major difference is a heavier crank on the smaller bike, but none of the suspension or abs corner stability of the 1190 so for most why buy the little one? ok a bit of a difference in price but its unlikly that the little one will hold value as well as the bigger brother, + if you are happy with 96bhp then the 990 does it already and plenty of good ones still available with the added bonus of simpler and a vast supply of well proven after market bits. in a few years it may make sense but for now its a bit like a bike without a purpose. Which is a shame its a nice bike, just not nice enough over its bigger brother for most, if it were a lot lighter and more off road focused it might satisfy some of the 950/990 brigade but not as it stands. If sales dont pick up it probably wont stay in the market much longer, much like the SE versions of the 950, not different enough from the 950 Adventure to generate sufficient sales to stay around very long.

Oh I am in the 990, aftermarket cans/seat/intake/clutch/big tank brigade ;-) so its never going to satisfy me!!! however the 1290 SA or the new S1000XR might tempt me as a second bike for playing on fast touring, and arseing around.

I think the problem with the 1050 is its spec against the completion such as the Tiger 800

The price at £9500 I feel is now about right

the market for a proper big bore off road bike must be tiny. isn't it just a vocal few making a lot of noise out of proportion to real demand?

at the time i bought my 1190, i saw it as an updated, more roomy SMT. ok, it does have 17/19" wheels, but i found the SM too twitchy anyway. now it looks like there will be a 1290 SDT, probably with a small screen and comedy panniers.

That sounds awfully like an 1190R with the 100bhp 'off road' map selected :)

not sure on that, I think its the wizardry etc with trick suspension, that has stoped many of the 950/990 types from even thinking about a change to one of the newer models.

I was just thinking aloud, maybe the 990 Adv style offroader has had its day

plenty of use for such things in the USA perhaps?

it's the same for the new honda thing - they make out it's very dirt orientated, but WTF really wants that? if that's what it is, it will be compromised as a road bike. with the 1190R, KTM seem to have pulled it off, but honda? i don't think so.

It's also the wizardry that is attracting new people to KTM. They are almost going to war over on the toilet section on whether they will be able to retro fit abs pro.

I'm with Andres and Cookie on this - the amount of people that actually enjoy they're big(er) bike offroad is remarkably small. However, the part that I would disagree with is the vocal part... the vocal ones are frequently not the ones who actually take their bike offroad :blast

<hijack> regardless of whether you have ABS... isn't braking hard mid corner still going to ruin the bike dynamics and your ability to hold the line you were on?

Call me old fashioned, but I feel like 'needing' abs pro says more about riding ability than anything else...

I'm starting to sound like an airhead owner who smells of wee!

It doesn't mater what it actually does or doesn't do. It has nothing to do with need but want.
I cant remember if it was here or on adventure rider that I asked when the first argument would be over its worth. Abs pro guys saying it has saved their lives, abs guys saying it's bolox and none abs guys saying it's all bolox.

i thought that the whole point of it was to avoid the bike standing up and going off line?

i was going to say i can't say if it works as i've never had it come on, but then i remembered a fast corner i totally misjudged last year. up to now, i always thought it was my fantastic riding skills that saved me from the oncoming traffic, but now i'm thinking...maybe it wasn't?

completely agree, I think they will probably swap one kind of owner for another, I have to say I think that there are more of the ones who want the wizardry who WILL actually buy a new bike as opposed to the one who complain who if they had the option would also complain that they don't have the money for a new bike!!, and after all KTM are in the business to sell bike.
I am not the sort of person that any of them are aimed at, I buy a bike and keep if for at least 10 years or so normally, had the wife's Harley since 94 and no intention of spelling it, had my 1100GS for 8 years and my 990 for 5, I have looked at newer bikes and test rode a couple, haven't been persuaded to put money down, to be honest the canbus and complicated electronic wizardry puts me off to a great deal.

seriously close to buying one of these as a second bike. I went to Colwyn Bay M/Cs to see there demo which is £8400…I rode it for around three hours, No sales pressure or mixer. Enjoyed the bike….they told me they ae doing a deal at present the 1050 Adv on a new plate zero miles , full luggage at £8999.if I dont want panniers , they will do at £8400 ! so the new one is the same price as the second hand demo !!!

wonder if any one can better that deal ?

Was quoted £9999 for a new one with three piece luggage at my dealer - them (obviously) saying nothing else possible (low rate pcp too)

Very happy with mine. Great usable power delivery.
And the price really does make it good value money. The build quality and finish are high.

No it's not the fastest but it really feels a lot lighter than my last bike, a 1150 GSA .
