Is this normal !

The reality is this - a few people have problems (fair enough) but the vast majority do not and the new GS LC is the best selling GS ever - make what you will of the facts.

The dealers will tell you there ain't no problems at all ! so taking into account the vast amount of owners on this site with crap gearboxes and ESA, and the same across the pond on the adv-rider someone is lying.

Ok i do not disagree that it may be the best selling gs, but thats only because punters did not like the traits of the hexhead, some punters chase hp and do not get the gs ride, also new buyers to the gs brand are blinded by technology, its by far not very good quality wise compared to previous models, why is that !

The twin-cam is a great bike (I had one) but it is a bit soft compared to the LC.

Absolutely no difference in performance in the real world.

On a track with two riders of similar ability I would imagine the wc would pull away from a twin cam,but as I said, in the real world the wc is not going to get from A to B any quicker than a twin cam.

The LCs has noticeably more grunt than the twin-cam especially two up, that is the real 'real world'.

The LC is like a good fit horse eager to please. The twin cam is more like an eager pony, tries but is not quite there.
there is no doubt to anybody who has compared the two that the LC is a lot more responsive on the throttle. The TC is a good bike but the LC engine is the next step on.

we all have different opinions and reasons why we ride the bike we do. i never tried the KTM or explorer as I was impressed with BMWs quality. However that opinion is fast going down hill. I am committed to my LC for the next 10 years or so. Tired of losing money changing bikes and I have to admit that the LC ticks all my requirements apart from corrosion...

I do agree the wc is rev happy, less vibes and has a greater top speed (if that floats your boat) where's as the TC can feel a bit suffocated, however both bikes niche market is on twisty rds and there ain't a lot in them, if you chase motorways than the wc wins hands down, I've taken both bikes around the ring and the WC will spank the TC, it does seem the WC engine is the nxt step forward, its being fitted into several new models but the gearbox is a step back and whilst i did enjoy the WC, the TC feels a pleasure to ride and does not have a SHIT GEARBOX.

I'm not chasing my bike is faster than yours mister, I'd rather opt for a better riding experience be it on a slower bike is no problem.

I followed a mate on his TC and me on my GSA wc he had a hill top tune with power commander and to be fair there wasn't a lot in it that TC was Flying.

on road , its more the rider's skill (and bravery) that separates bikes. Not the stated power

nonetheless , my water GS is still the best bike I have ever had the privilege to ride. The gearbox is getting sweeter as it gains mileage. And now with the GSAP , its sublime , esp when the rider is wringing it hard.

if you hate the bike that much , sell it and move on.

If you think its broken and BMW says it isn't , get an expert's opinion and assuming it concurs , sue BMW. Simple.

constantly bitching about it just makes you out as a whiner (and after __ many bikes and ___ many engines , it merely adds to that assessment).

It's such a shame you've had issues with yours, as there are thousands of bikes without gearbox problems. The gearbox on my GSA is super smooth, and much nicer than on any of my Twin Cams.:thumb

NEW ENGINE,CRAP GEARBOX !!

Like others have mentioned Ive just had a new Engine fitted to my GS due to corrosion, which was to be fair, quite minor (5565 miles).
When speaking to the Dealer about the above I also told them the Gearbox problem, engaging first, then bad clunking up to 2nd and down to 2nd from third, this was all noted.
Believing all would be well when I collected the bike I rode off into the sunset accompanied by the same clunking as before
On speaking to the Dealer I was informed that the Engine was replaced 'like for like ' in other words, light flywheel not the new heavy one (which I believed from posts on here might cure the problem !)
So,really, apart from the paintwork being nice and shiny on me new engine,I have the same bike as before (with zero miles on it of course)
I decided to go to another dealer and try out a GSA to see if their was any difference.
Having been out for an hour I found hardly any difference at all but on returning to Dealer I thought I'd chance my luck by asking about a P/X. :D
Feckin wish I hadn't
What I thought was going to be a small amount (ish) of adjustment nearly knocked me off me chair !!!
I was also informed that despite my new engine having covered only 200 miles at this point,it was the over 5000 miles on the clock that counted because of wear n tear to the other parts of the Bike !
I was also told that any prospective buyer would want to know why it had a new engine,I thought the answer to that would be simple but obviously not,so not only am I the owner of a new engine clunky gearbox beautiful 2014 GS,I am stuck with something no one else will want unless I feckin give it away !!!!!

Hi, you don't say what they offered you, I was quoted £11k for my 11 month old GS WC with wire wheel option with 7k miles recently, against a new one 2015 spec identical bike, making my contribution around the 4.5k mark..

How many owners with clunky gearboxes blip the throttle on down changes?

How many owners with clunky gearboxes blip the throttle on down changes?

I do. Have always been taught to do so.

an observation : I can choose to shift in a manner which is clunky . I can also choose to do otherwise. Its down to me how I adapt to the bike. That has been the way with all bikes I have ever ridden.

it cant be a gearbox problem or very unlikley.. its a clutch problem due to the majority of happy customers, at worst i could have lived with the box/clutch on my old bike and i dont for one minute think other manufacturers would have looked after their customers like me with BMW suppling new bikes, :D

Doesn't everybody ? I have been doing it since I got my first bike in 1998. I have seen a few youtube videos of riders who don't either through ignorance or whatever. I posted up a video some time ago of a rider who just banged it down and the results were truly painful to anyone who has an ounce of mechanical sympathy.

Very true, but can anyone recall a manufacturer going through the same issues since 2005? EWS, petrol pump relay, drive shaft and now gearbox clutch problems.

My gsa has a crap change from first to second and a poor change from second to third. once above those gears it is smooth both up and down the box. I spent a full afternoon on a deserted stretch of tarmac trying to find out why it is this way. It engages first with a crunch whatever the revs or for how long the clutch has been pulled in, if you pull away on minimum revs ie below 1600 rpm and then change up into second below 12 to 18 mph it will engage second quite quietly but in real world terms ie when you pull out of a junction and go to accelerate safely up to the national speed limit - the way you would on any other bike- the bike either refuses to engage second or goes in with a bang and a lurch.
I still have my Twin Cam and the gearbox is better in every respect to the new watercooled GSA's box
