It’s only a slight oil leak, just replace the seal for me please.

Been there, done that.
Mine had two large shims installed. Initially, only put one back in as the other had fell in the oil tray. That is why it had a bit of play when installed and had to start again.

Been there, done that too - I wondered what that funny noise was as I was riding back from Dover one night :eek:

Was very common on the 1150's. So much that some would take a new bearing kit with them on a long trip 'just in case'

I do
Replaced it in a hotel room of a pretty swanky hotel once
using the oven and the freezer and the tools that I had.
Remember you need a 7mm hex key

How long it's a piece of string... it seems dependent in a number of factors.

I replaced one that was causing a small vibration. With the wheel off, the rotation of the hub in the FD was rough.

2yrs later it failed with zero warning, just as I rolled if the train in Calais - documented on here... but I was carrying a spare bearing, seal and O-ring.

Maybe I did something wrong when I fitted the new bearing, but not quite sure what that might have been? The deal did get a bit of grit caught in it st one stage so was weeping, maybe that contributed?

The moral of that story is, if you're going any distance from home - yunno,Tesco or Starbucks - make sure you have a spare bearing and seal stashed somewhere in your luggage.

I used the OEM bearing... both times. I think the bearings are fine.

My guess is, that it's the final assembly pre-load in the bearing. Now that could be affected by a difference in dimension of the new bearing, since (if I remember correctly) some of the shims in there can be 0.05mm, which would probably also be a max tolerance on the bearing in production... So in theory they'r could be af much as 0.05mm worth of too much side loading, which eventually kills them?

I don't really know. But ultimately, it's the breakdown of the cage that does it...

I've never had the pleasure of replacing one of these bearings , but bear with me:D:nenau
Am I right in thinking the cage is only there to hold the ball bearings in place and make assembly easier? If so , would it be possible to remove the cage and insert the individual ball bearings into place?
I always used to do this with my BMX bikes-- a bit of grease to stick them in place, pop them in, sorted. The cage wasted enough space to allow an extra ball to be inserted. Just a thought.

Totally no! That cage is instrumental in the bearing assembly working. Full stop.

Very obviously.

Just a thought based on some limited experience, qualified in the first line of my post. The cage looks the same as the ones I referred to, hence the suggestion. The extra ballbearing , all things considered , has to be a good thing as it removes the flimsy cage which may be the root of the problem.

Part of the plan was to keep it if I liked it enough and sell my LC while it's still worth something. Its a great bike, obviously been looked after. It runs just fine and is a lot more nimble than my 2005 R1200RT ever was, surprisingly so for a big lump. The seat is comfier than the so-called 'comfort seat' on my LC. Only problem I've had is it makes my hips ache, presumably due to the wide tank.
Aches aside, I would be happy to keep it but never mind.
