Your problem sounds familiar.

Started my bike from cold and it was fine, drove 1/2 mile started loosing power and by the time I got home it was gutless but would still tick over, left to cool down it would do the same again

Spent the last two weeks on a rapid learning curve trying to find this problem on my 1100GS, not got the same resources as you, but with an AVO 8 and a rusty split pin I discovered one of the throttle body blanking plugs missing you know the ones you remove to do balancing blanked it off with tape and went for a test run now seems OK!

Is one going to enlighten the masses as to what the problem was and what your rectification /solution actually was?

Owner always parked it on the side stand, so the water was in the lefthand side of the tank until he'd ridden a couple miles which coincided with the temp guage reaching 5 bars, just as the pump started to suck up some water.
Kept taking the tank off ,so the water was getting splashed about and not settling which made the bike run fine everytime i tested something, then a while later, once the water had settled, it started to act up again.

I even pumped fuel out of the injector supply and it was all clear and ok.

Alls well that ends well.

Is this because of a blocked overflow in the filler cap?

Was happening on my 1150 (water in the fuel), pipe had corroded so every time it was blown out the rust seemed to pick up "bits" of something and block virtually straight away.

I got told to put a cup of alcohol in the tank every so often (once a month) to help get rid of any potential water build up. The theory being the alcohol will mix with any water and help it flush through the system.

Is this utter tosh or the advice of a sage?

Took me 2 days to reach the same conclusion with the same problem, respect for finding it, many have tried and failed
