Khulu's 2024 Tour

Because my internet is so slow uploading photos it is taking ages so this report with be done in stages!

Day 5:

Monday 01.07.2024

338 miles and I ended up in Tarnow, Poland (150 miles west of Lviv, Ukraine). I, luckily yet quickly, found a nice hotel (with barrier access parking area) at the bottom of the town (it’s built on a hill). Unpacked and headed uphill to explore the town which was very nice with a few restaurant / bar places and the tourist board young lady (who spoke better English than me [not hard, I know]) directed me to a lovely olde worlde restaurant where I had a very pleasant dinner.

Day 6:

Tuesday 02.07.2024

317 miles today to Wolstyn in north-western Poland. I came here a couple of times when I worked for Baxter’s as they have a factory here. I found a hotel no problem (but not as cheaply as I thought it should have been) then went to explore, as usual. I knew they had a steam locomotive museum and old trains here so I went to take a few photos. I couldn’t find the café I’d eaten in 8 years earlier but did find one in a basement that was alright but not fantastic.

Day 7:

Wednesday 03.07.2024

198 miles today.

I wanted to head west, but not too far, so I was closer to the Sachsenring circuit for an easy day’s ride the following day. I found Wittenburg on the map so decided to head there not knowing anything about the place. Attempt two found me a nice hotel, up a lane, with parking behind their secure chain barrier. I couldn’t get into my room until 14:00 or later but I could leave my bags, etc. at reception and go walk-about. It soon transpired that this was where Martin Luther attended university. Some of the architecture in this town is just amazing! Lunch on the street (well at a table on the street) was had and then, later, dinner at a bier garden that was very, very good complete with a few of these liquid nectars! The bier garden was empty when I did a recce early afternoon but by evening it was heaving inside, on two levels, and also outside.

Day 8:

Thursday 04.07.2024

190 miles today.

Time to head to my digs for the next 4 nights while attending the Sachsensing MotoGP races. This is to be in Zwonitz. I found the hotel no problem and parked around the back then went looking about “town”. After walking all over the place I still didn’t find a bar or café (in hindsight I should have headed out of town and uphill towards the railway station but I was staying in the village centre so just walked about there.) There is a local brewery here (I had researched that before I left home) and it was also closed. Back to the hotel and I managed to get a bier there. The brewery was fully booked for dinner but I found a lovely converted villa, with restaurant, for a very nice dinner. They call it a villa but a mansion would be nearer the truth.

Day 9:

Friday 05.07.2024

Day 1 at the race circuit. I’d done a recce of where to go when I first arrived so knew the local layout. There was a field about 1 mile uphill from the circuit that was free parking and a free shuttle bus service there and back. It was laid out for cars, which 99% of those there were in, so bikes were just parked anywhere – so I did and right near to the bus stop point. I was sat in T3 Ducati Tribune which involved a walk over the circuit to get to it.

Germany were playing again that night so the brewery were showing it on a big screen outside in their bier garden so that was where I ate and drank.

Day 10:

Saturday 06.07.2024

Day 2 at the races. The free shuttle was very well organized as it had police bike escorts, front and back, there and back and more police at every junction to stop traffic and give the buses priority – very well organised.

Dinner tonight – the brewery and the “villa” were both fully booked so I thought I’d eat in the hotel but, unfortunately, they weren’t doing food that night! Fortunately, there was an Italian restaurant that had room so I, and a Dutch couple staying in the hotel too, ate there.20240706_182007.jpg20240706_183918.jpg20240707_073527.jpg

Day 11:

Sunday 07.07.2024

Main race day and the place was heaving! At the end they opened the fence gates to let us cross the circuit to reduce traffic on the over track bridge. As soon as I reached my bike the thunder cracked overhead so I rushed to leave for my c. 10 mile commute back to my hotel. After about 3 miles the rain came and it was torrential! I knew there was a petrol station about 6 miles from the race parking area and, as I was riding in t-shirt and shorts, I got drenched! I stopped at the petrol station and put on my waterproofs for the rest of my commute (a bit late granted). I had pre-booked the brewery for dinner tonight so that was fine.

I covered about 84 miles during the race days.

Day 12:

Monday 08.07.2024

318 miles today.

The WSBK races at Most, Czechia don’t start until a week on Friday so I had to amuse myself for quite a few days yet. Where to go – I know, Italy! Heading south I decide to stay somewhere just inside Austria and no more. Up pops a place called Kufstein on my map so I book the Bahnhof hotel and head off. I find it easily (train tracks help) and park my bike at the front door where it stays overnight. It’s a lovey, old traditional station hotel (hotel Gisela). On the other side of the hotel is the river that separates the railway from the main part of the town. Over the bridge I walk and the old town is rather lovely. I find a nice café for a bier, or two, and a little something to eat. The hotel gave me a free entry ticket to the old castle but I didn’t managed to get there (maybe another time) but the town was very nice to walk about on a hot, sunny afternoon. Quite a few tourists were here too and my evening restaurant was rather busy.

Tuesday 09.07.2024

204 miles today.

As I had 10 days after Sachsenring before I was due to be in Most I decided to ride down the west of Italy and back up the east coast. I headed through Austria and decided to go down the west side of Lago di Garda. I stopped at a place called Toscolano Maderno where I found “hotel and resort Adria” that just happened to be owned/run by a biker who does Garda tours for Magellan Tour company. Other than this hotel, and a beach bar, there wasn’t much here so I took a return trip across lake Garda (just for something to do). The hotel did sell Weiss bier though so that was a bonus. Dinner was al fresco in the evening with a choice of bike-related pizzas! However, I chose fish instead and it was lovely.

Day 14:

Wednesday 10.07.2024

186 miles today.

Next stop was Lucca. I’d been here before but it was in torrential rain (I was in my car) and I didn’t stop over. I had found a wee “hotel” near one of the walled city’s entrance gates so that was a result. However, he charged me an extra 5 Euros to park inside his garden gate next to my room! I changed and went in search of the old anfiteatro (which wasn’t as easy to locate as I expected it to be) which I did get to eventually. I made the mistake of having a litro of beer here which proved very, very costly! (I should have known better). Lucca was a lovely place to explore and the next morning, before leaving, I went for an early morning walk around the whole city perimeter wall.
