LampF and HIDs

Probably the same ones that I just got but from a different seller/branding. I spent a couple of quid more on the anti dazzle/ceramic burners though. No idea if they are any better for it mind you.

Oh by the way I submerge them in a bucket of water, stood back and turned on and they worked fine so definitely waterproof.

I had issues with my dip beam as did Gert in the warmer climbs 25c+.
The same happened to me in Europe this summer again as the temp rose.
When doing my spring clean I swopped round the ballasts to see if it re-occurs.

Thought I would throw in my experience as, so far, it has not been mentioned as a factor. My HIDs have come from Les and the first set, fitted to a K1200S, gave the occasional problem on start which I traced to the connectors that fit into the existing headlight bulb fitment. These connectors need to be really tight and mine were vibrating loose and breaking the connection. My solution was to tie string around the base of the HID wires and then tie tightly around the back of the connector block once the connector was inserted - I never had another problem until I sold the bike 5 years later. I mentioned the problem to Les and I notice that the connectors now do snap into place much better BUT I reckon they might be worth a look/clean and check if you are having problems. My second set on my GS have only been on a year but have been faultless to date. However, a friend's GS has a persistent problem which new Ballasts & bulbs has failed to resolve - I suspect that the CANBUS is not happy with the startup current anymore and is tripping - it works fine with a normal bulb.

Thanks for sharing, after two years I'm not getting LampF from a Les kit, I'll check this out.

I have a Les Wassall HID 50 in main and dip beam bought from another Tosser. It's never given me any problems though the main connector to the dip beam bulb connector was struggled for a while. But it's behaved fine over the last year. I have an Odyssey battery that hardly drops its output after starting the bike.

My wires, HID ballasts are well strapped under the beak. I not have zip ties on the original bulb connectors, but that does sound a good idea.

If the dip beam lamp continually trips on startup, you could consider fitting a handlebar switch unit to switch off dip beam during engine start. With engine running, the current surge wont be an issue.

Hi Bendy, good idea about the handlebar switch. I don't like having to 'reboot' the bike immediately after a cold start, can't be good for the battery. Would that technique clear the LampF warning on the dash though? I had a LampF error again this morning after leaving the bike on the Optimate over night, so I'd be surprised if it is the battery which isn't two years old yet.

Hmm good point. It's Canbus so a simple cut-off switch WILL cause a LampF. D'Oh!

Maybe you could get clever. Put a resistor in line with the ballast to restrict the current pull. Wire the switch to short out the resistor. After engine is started flick the switch to restore full power to the HID ballast block.

A normally open latching relay will drop out of contact when power goes off.

Bike is started. Ballast has an inline resistor limiting its starting surge. When engine is running press a button to close the relay. Being latching it stays closed. That shorts out the resistor so ballast now sees full power until the next ignition off.

Or talk to Les Wassall and get a ballast that doesn't spike the start current.

A quick blip of the throttle usually cleats any LampF failure on mine. Or ignition off and back on. Only happens very occasionally. I'll try the main beam flash trick next time and see if it works.

Les Wassall has provided me with excellent customer service and if I was buying another HID kit I'd be buying it from Les again for sure.

Why not use LED instead ?
Fitted one set to my Vauxhall
The other to go on my g's
They work great on the Vauxhall so hoping for the same on the GS

Hey Lawvar, do you have an Amazon or eBay link for the LED's?

Thanks!
