Let there (their?) be light!

I have acquired a set of PIAA 002's with 35W Plasma Ion bulbs in (yuk!)...Can I change the bulbs to the PIAA Extreme White 55W=100W with out any detrimental effects to the lights themselves (because of heat). Also would I still be able use the same relay that came with them in the wiring loom?

The Plasma Ion bulbs are for sale unused...so if anybody fancies some nice (probably) puss yellow light bulbs then give me a shout.

Well the so called experts have managed to ignore two emails so far (don't you just love good customer service). I even duplicated the email to the US PIAA site to..still ignored. Its probably to near Christmas now to bother phoning and I was going to fit them over crimbo.

Only guess work on the colour from the description on the web site..but any light with a yellow tinge would be puss like to me

Hello Adie.

Check if the same light is available with a bigger capacity lamp (bulb) as standard. If it isn't then I think that you would be pushing your luck, certainly with the 100W option. If the units are plastic I wouldn't upgrade.

If they are metal housing and lamp location plate then you can take a chance. Check the relay for the rating. Watts = Volts x Amps so your 35w lamps (x 2 = 70watts) require 6 amps if they run from the same relay on your bikes 12 volt circuit. If you fit 55w lamps that power demand goes up to 10 amps. The 100w option goes up to 17 amps and the start surge may need a 20 amp capacity. That's quite a serious current requirement and it's unlikely that the standard relay will be up to it.

Failing that recruit some more beer vouchers and buy a double HID unit from HIDS4U (no connection except as a very happy customer), they put out 3 times the light of a 55w halogen lamp and only draw 35 watts. They do cost around £200 for a set though. Pay by debit card, discount, and tell them you are from UKGSer , further discount.

Just to clear something up here, PIAA "claim" that the Extreme White Plus 55watt bulbs give out the same light output as a 100watt bulb.

But they do not draw 100 watts worth of current, only 55watts worth.

Looking at the std PIAA relays that I have here, they would be able to stand the increase in amps from 35w up to 55w.

The only issue that you need to check is the heat build up, but if memory serves me correct, most if not all the PIAA lights are metal bodied.

And it is also my understanding that all the PIAA range of lights assemblies and bulbs are fully interchangeable
