Lowered GS to Standard/GSA

Hi,

New here so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Long story short I bought a 2013 GS off a non motorrad dealer, either the dealer didn't know or didn't want to tell that the bike was lowered only after I found out when my short uncle sat on it and I contact the dealer that sold the bike.

So in my infinte wisdom :blast I went out and bought a set of front and rear GSA shocks to rise my bike up, problem is it didn't actually make a difference, so I was recommended to speak to all the wise folk here for a clue or the answer that I seek.

You either bought a second set of lower shocks (unlikely) or your bike chassis isn't lowered and only has a low seat on it.
 
Ok I did check with the dealer who sold the bike and they confirmed that it was a factory low bike possible they are wrong ??

They only took the registration number

And my short uncle rides an air cooled GS with a lower seat and he is still on tip toes a bit
 
Is the Factory lowered bike a different chassis or is it done on the shocks? I measured the shocks from my bike and the GSA I bought and there is no difference in length, and to me to make a lowered chassis would cost production to much as its a made to order part not something easily adjusted
 
This is an extract from this web site, admittedly from 2008 vintage.

All of the BMW factory-engineered lowered suspension bikes come with a low seat, but the actual lowering modification from the standard machine varies from model to model. Bikes such as the F 800 ST come with a shorter rear shock absorber and front forks which have been lowered through the yokes. Boxer engined models, such as the R 1200 RT and R 1200 GS, achieve the lower positioning by adding a shorter strut to the front and rear shock absorbers. The Telelever settings have been changed.

There are different part nos. for the front and rear suspension for standard and lowered suspension

Take a look at the fiche details from here - sections 31 & 33.
 
I think you will find that they have different frames. You will find when riding both , your knees are bent much more on the lowered bike !!
 
Frames are the same, it's the shocks that are different.

Why worry about it, just fit the thicker standard seat.

I have owned one of each...std and factory lowered... both great bikes.
 
Sell your bike to your short arsed uncle, and order a GSA. Job done.:thumb:D
 
If it fits , just ride it. On the road, the lowered chassis handles better than a normal height one due to it's lower CoG.

Thanks everyone for the reply unfortunately not having any luck and BMW cannot tell me the length of a shock they use in their bikes which I find really weird and inconvenient, I understand I may be doing something that no one has done before but still find it strange.
I think I have figured out the part numbers required (another strange thing BMW do they only put part of the part number on the parts :nenau
But upon finding a set that match the standard shocks part number I asked the seller to measure bolt hole to bolt hole which is all I'm concerned about and the measure the same he was also kind enough to supply a chassis number of the bike they were removed from and asked my local dealer to confirm its a standard level bike which he did.
Now I have been thinking but the level sensors front and rear would the play a part or are they for when your under hard braking acceleration etc??

Why don't you put wilber shocks on it?
That way you can tell them the height you want it , and they will make it so specific, they will take your weight with kit on, ask you if you take passengers and if you have full luggage, you wont get it much more precise than that.
 
Did you get the measurments,
I have my non esa standard height shocks in the garage i could check if it helps
Not sure but cant see esa being different overall length unloaded,
Is the bike too low for you, or too much sag when on the bike,??

Make sure Wilbers fit your shorter side and centre stands when you're there!

Unfortunately not Sachs can't tell me been on the phone to BMW UK and they have asked I send a message to the special request team just waiting to hear back.
If you could that would give me an idea
And it's just to low for me

That sounds very expensive got a price
 
Set the rear shock to its highest setting and fit the BMW high seat.

That's what I've just done, I'm 6'3" and I'm now on tip toes!
