Dont seem to have the same avoidances options in mapsource as in the zumo itself, which if you want to avoid motorways is a PITA on mapsource, I tend to use faster time rather than shortest distance and prefer minor roads biased unless I want the route to be all motorway.

Anyone have any hints and tips on this.

I usually manage to get best results by using loads of waypoints but its time consuming and "if you always do what you always do you always get what you always get" so im hoping to benefit from others experience here.

thanks for any advice

Pablo1,
In mapsource, click on edit, preferences, and routing tab. Allows you to refine from here. If planning routes for pass routes un tick the seasonal changes one or it will divert away.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your planning.:thumb

I'm not convinced this slider has any value, as the Zumo will recalculate the route in any case as it is imported. Since the preferences set in Mapsource are not carried over to the Zumo, you can end up with a different route after importing it to the Zumo. I set the slider midway in Mapsource and choose 'fastest' which seems to result in minimal changes when a route is imported.

Pablo, you shouldn't need loads of waypoints - just one each at the start and end. Let Mapsource calculate the route between these two points and then use the 'selection' tool in Mapsource to drag n' drop the route. Drag the route onto a point on a road leading out of town (or midway between towns), not in the centre of a town/village. Make a rough outline of the route first then fine tune as necessary. You'll probably find you only end up with 15-20 via points over 200-300 miles of back roads.

The selection tool automatically creates a via point when you drop the route on a particular road. The beauty of via points (as compared to way points) is that you can divert off-route and the Zumo will not keep trying to route you back to a missed via-point. Once you have passed abreast of the via point it will route you on to the next via point. If you miss a way point, it will want to route you back to that way point!

apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs - this is the method I've used for several years on a Quest/Z550/Z220 and it works well for me :thumb2
