In fairness anybody, trained or not, can stamp your service book !!!!

Only dealers have the equipment, training & access to upto date infomation required, to fully understand the most recent models. How will a technician who has been out of a dealership for more than two years be able to diagnose problems with the can bus?, or read the fault memory in the integral ABS??, or carry out any recalls or modifications required???

Love them or hate them dealers are the only single point for all the required information needed to service the modern BMWs

And thats all due to BMW's policy - not the fact that the dealers are any better than independants - by protecting their dealers, because of the money that they have to lay out on their dealership, which is fair enough -

But don't try to make out it's for the benefit of the customer, because it isn't , it's for the proprieter/company, that owns the dealership .

I understand what you say Steptoe, but if you had to buy all the gear BMW decide you must have, then I'm sure you would have to charge a lot more than you currently do.

See It's all about returns, I don't know if you are fully covered on insurance, employ people, give paid holidays, give people loan bikes, buy special tools, but I'm sure you charge for your services. but trust me it costs a lot more to run a dealership than peolpe think. If you had invested £ 500,000 in one then I'm sure you would also be interested in your return, profit is not a bad word.

I wouldn't want the headache of running a dealership, i can only imagine the money you have to turn-over just to break even

Thats why i just employ myself - i have a loan bike, 1150GS - and buy the special tools if i can't make them -

I don't have paid holidays or sick leave ( i can only dream :D ) .

I won't be servicing any 1200GS's - because i can't afford the necessary equipment needed .
