I keep losing my internet connection -

when i try to re-connect it tells me " modem reporting a problem .

i might stay connected for 30 mins or 2 minutes, it's pretty random when it decides to dis-connect

How can i check my modem, and do they go wrong often -

If i need one, where do i go .

Remember, if you answer, i'm a disaster with computy things -

also, i have to turn off the computer and re-start it to get connected again

old skool dial up modem?

or

adsl broadband modem?

if the former, get the latter.

if the latter, get a router.

Modem Probs

First mate have a good old wire wiggle

Unplug and plug back in every thing.

Have a go...Now is it Dial up or Broadbeans?

Dial up is usually a PCI card in side the PC

ADSL Modems are nasty and live on a USB port out side the PC.

Lots of probs can be down to BT

Fiddling at the exchange if it Braodbeans and they nearly always fix thereselves !

So its always worth waiting a day............?

Give me a ring 01394 276246

I'll talk you down.

AS the previous poster said get your self a Router..defo the best way of accessing broadband as you get some sort of firewall protection and you can "see" what your connect state is.

Sorry, Broadband modem -

pulled out and reattached all the leads and plugs -

Whats a router ? is that the small box that you plug the phone lead and modem lead into ?

nah, it's what you make furniture with...

a router is like a very dumb computer that handles your broadband connection, then distributes the connections to a number of pcs [usually 4].

so, does this take the place of a modem box thingy - or do you use it with the modem ?

bear with me, i've nearly got it -

my connection has been OK today , so far .

Steptoe - I assume you've got ADSL?

I got one of these the other day to replace my nightmare Wanadont livebox (don't get me started on that little bundle of joy!). It's a combined ADSL modem and wireless router - which means you dispense with the crap modem supplied free by your ISP. It becomes your modem, and it routes the connection to one or more PC's via normal network cables, or wirelessly if you happen to be so equipped. They have built in firewalls and make everything much safer for you by isolating your pc from direct contact with t'webternet.

There's a number on the market Netgear, Belkin etc - £60 to £90 will see you clear and they are a synch to set up.

well spotted :D the unit i linked to is in fact a modem/router combined.

it would usually be left active 24/7. as soon as your computer boots up, you are connected.

it plugs into your adsl skt. to connect to the telephone exchange & an ethernet connection to your pc. your particular pc will almost certainly have an ethernet port if it was built in the last couple of years.
if it hasn't, they're about a tenner to buy as an add in card.

no additional kit is needed.

the best way to a stable connection IMO.

edit: can't imagine an IT god such as yourself only having the one pc, but if you do there's this one with just the one port at very nearly half money.
