Morocco 3rd Party Insurance

Nick,

If you're on the 650, take spare clutch/brake levers, clutch/throttle cables, bulbs, fuses and a front inner tube (can be used on the rear at a push).

Motoworks sell 2nd hand stuff. Sell after the trip, or keep as spares.

Take that and nothing'll happen, take nothing..................

From personal experience, breakdown companies won't cover Morocco, even if they say they do.

The first year I went, we came across a guy who'd clipped a pothole ina car. He was with Mondial Assist (the French version I think) and their truck was 160km away. They would "get to him within 4hrs guarranteed................maybe"

BMW Insurance were looking at it, as their tours go there, but I understand they now have a van as back up.

If you're bikes in that bad a way, ie unrideable, a talk with the hotel desk where you are will produce a man with a van to take you and the bike to the border.

Push it over and call the breakdown co. Ceuta is part of Spain. If it's still an issue, push it onto the ferry and get them to meet you at Algeciras.

Again, from personal experience, a fistful of euros & some subtly sorts most things, including getting the bike thru the border without the owner/rider or paperwork ;)

It's just like Mr Ben. As if from nowhere a little man appears and says "you need help?"

A small discussion away from everyone else and a van able to go thru the border appears and you're away.

Note; Your passport is stamped that you've bought a bike in. If you try and leave it without it, forget it - or more euros before you try and go thru the border. Leave it until you're about to go thru and you're in a world of poo.

We had a Dakar written off on the trip last May and they wanted £2k for him to be able to leave it in Marrakesh and fly out, hence the van scenario.............effectiveley as he was leaving it, he was importing it................

So basically, "A fistful of Euros" and you'll overcome anything.

HTH

Cheers

Jon

Use Carole Nash- yeah right- NOT!!!

I went for a few weeks in Iceland last summer on my TTR600. i rang carole Nash and their representative assured me unequivocally that both my insurance and breakdown cover was valid. As time was indeed passing i forgot to ask for written confirmation of my status. So when, on the day before i was due to leave Iceland for home, my TTR let me down, i hitched the 10 miles to the nearest phone and asked them to come and get me, which they said they would. I hitched the 10 miles back to the bike and waited.. and waited.... and suprisingly enough waited. Eventually the Icelandic Police stopped (after cruising past a couple of times) and inquired as to whether i was OK. Thay lent me their phone which i used to call the breakdown no. They said i wasn't covered and they were not going to help me. As the weather was closing in the police arranged to have a local come and get me. Not a bad earner that £140 for a 40 mile round trip. I came home and persued both the breakdown company and CN with no joy from either. So i voted with my money and gained insurance with someone else.
I'm sure there a few valuable lessons to be learned from my experience, but number1 is: If you are fooking stupid enough to get insured with CN get written confirmation of any details that are not stated on your cover note.

Insurance for Morocco

I know it's been asked before, but just for an up to date answer, Would those going this year please enlighten me?

Carol Nash seem unsure whether their policy covers me in Morocco.

I've read that you buy 'insurance' when you go into the country at the border.... Is that motor insurance or what?

Answers much appreciated.

Will

Yes, you can buy motor insurance at the border (and won't be let in unless you can show that you DO have motor insurance).

However, you'd do far better to obtain insurance in the UK if you can. We all know how hard it is making a claim against a UK insurance company - consider how you'd get on making a claim against a company based in Tangiers, with all of the dealings in French!

Same here. Must be a standard fee.

I had already spoken to Carole Nash but been told my policy would not cover me for Morocco, so had kind of shelved the idea of going there.

Do you have to have an existing insurance policy with BMW Insurance for them to cover you for Morocco, or is the £30 policy something you can buy from BMW Ins in its own right?

I think you would already have to be insured with them.

I really wouldn't let the fact that your insurance won't or can't be extended to cover you for Morocco put you off going. Last time I went I got cover at the border, for what it's worth.

There are many countries outside the EU that don't require any insurance but, if it's required you can buy it at the border.

The point in question Bob - what is it worth? What cover did it give you (or promise to)? 3rd party as a maximum, I would've thought...

Mike:confused:

Yep, third party only. Whether it's actually worth anything I couldn't say but, it gets you into the country.

It seems strange to us westerners but, the idea of insuring motor vehicles in some countries is unheard off.

Yep, alot of the old Eastern block countries, African countries and even NZ.

If you always have fully comp here, as I do, then it feels strange not being fully covered when travelling but, you just have to weigh up the pro's and con's of whether to go or not to go and the likely risks you and your bike face.

Having been to Morocco twice, I may just have been lucky but, I haven't had any problems other than having a stuffed toy nicked off the bike.

Places we stayed had a secure place to keep the bike at night, either in a court yard or even in the room with us. If it wasn't secure we didn't stay there. When camping we chained the bikes together and set the alarms.

Insurance that covers Morocco

My insurance renewal is due soon, and I need to ensure it will cover me for Morrocco trip in October. Was going to renew with ebike, but they don't cover Morocco. And looking at Carole Nash site (my current insurer) it seems their green card is for touring in Europe only.

Any recommendations?

I believe that "insurance" for Morocco is purchased at the border crossing (for what it's worth )

Otherwise you may need a specialist broker. Try Horizons Unlimited

Ask Carole Nash to send you a certificate with Morocco included in the 'green card' paragraph on the back. They will accept this at the Moroccan border.

Insurance in Morocco

It is worth checking up but even if your insurance company cover you for Morocco, you will still have to purchase insurance at the border - we did in April'05 (any excuse to get foreign currency out of you), they won't let you through otherwise. Also make sure all your documents V5 etc are originals, they charge money to let you through with copies and God help you if you forget any documents - it costs you a fortune to get through and then causes delays when you try to get back out.
