Do I really need to use a mount plate of some sort if I want to permanently fit an aftermarket box to my 1150GS as a top box? The intended box is a Peli Storm 2450.

There seem to be plenty of outfits willing to supply me mount plates - Caribou seem to be the obvious choice, given the box - but I presume all these do is offer a quick(er) release and possibly a stiffer base for the box. I'm happy to have a relatively permanently fixed box, and I'm looking at the peli case I have and am thinking it probably doesn't need to be much stiffer...

I reckon I can remove the grab handle and use these fixings, and bolt through the two slots at the back of the rack. Or have I missed something? Am I going to break my rack and find my case bouncing down the motorway? Or is there enough value in being able to remove the box quickly to justify the cost (and a little extra loading on the already under-engineered rack)?

I had a peli 1450 mounted on a TT locking topbox mount some years ago.... and it looked great ... At least you could take it off and use the mounting plate as a rack if you needed to :thumb

Mounted my Peli case on to the top of a Wunderlich rack, but only because I already had it fitted. Even wired 12v in to it to charge my 'phone etc.

Given that the base of the Peli case is very tough I should think that just to just put spacers between it and the mounting points you have would be sufficient :thumb

Here's a Pelican 1600 on my GS. In my case I had an old H&B rack which covers the rear of the bike with the pillion seat removed. I just bolted the the case to the rack.
