My bikes not right?????

Well, we can agree there then! Lets await the final outcome of the strip down eh? Mikeyboy knows who & what was done to this bike and if we can source a reason for the failure we can move forward. The final drive was a complete coincidence, but the oil was changed at the last service mentioned here at the start of the thread, and the bike did only 300 miles until the FD was completely bolloxed.

Well, if Stella Mileage thinks Mikeyboy is a good man, that's good enough for me. ;)

I think he means the Sergeant!
More than happy with what he's done on my bikes tho'.
Also approved by MickDB1 -a man who knows what's what.:thumby:

PS my driveshaft and FD replaced by BM @ 30K and FD bearings and seals by Mikey at 37K ( plus driveshaft FOC by Rainbow/BM - I blame the crap seal design - UJ gaiters on cars and older GSs last just fine!

the 1150 uses a wheel bearing design similar to the old Austin Mini front hubs. They were never a reliability issue even when seriously souped up but BMW decided to redesign what was already doing a great job.

We have a driveline with no significant shock absorption and very low profile tyres compared to almost any car so the transmission gets thumped. The (older) Japanese bikes have a rubber cush drive on the wheel connection, cars have a spring clutch centre and many have a dual mass flywheel. Car driveshafts also have constant velocity joints packed in slimy grease. CV joints cost more money than UJs but there was no need to waste money on a redesigned back axle.

Well spotted that man, first prize for guessing the true identity of Stellar Millage is a Pint, when and if we meet!

OK, so who's the culprit then, certainly not me. I am assuming that nothing was blocking the oil ways and the only time it was out of my possession was during the service. What other conclusion could possibly be drawn from the evidence?? Thanks to mikey boy for all his dilligence, hard work & patience. Now for the expensive resurrection. Then I will have to sell one of them as having 2 1200GS's does seem excessive.:nenau

Just a thought - did the mechanic take it for a test ride without refilling the oil?

No, It never left the hydraulic lift, I was in the vicinity but not present in the workshop. There were 2 guys working on the bike in stages. However I was alarmed at the amount of distractions during my time there, people just wandering in and out, making tea etc. Its going to be nigh on impossible to pin the blame on anyone here with any degree of certainty, so I will just keep it to myself who serviced it, needless to say I won't be back next service!

So are we saying that the bike has been run with no oil in it and that is the technicians wot did it ?

Just so I am clear on this

It is not unknown for a mechanic to drop the oil, replace the filter and forget to either replace the drain plug and then fill the vehicle with oil ( or not as the case may be and end up with it on the floor) ..........seen that one twice or worse where one mechanic starts a job and is distracted or put on another job and someone else assumes it has oil in and starts the engine .

Our workshops where people were swapped on and off jobs if a more urgent one came in had a NO OIL board where the keys were hung up to prevent this happening plus a cover to hang over the ignition switch to stop anyone putting the keys in

That said a friend bought a brand new Mille R, which was supplied to the dealer from the factory having been test run minus any oil.................dealer spotted it straight away on the PDI .......... new engine at 0.3 miles on the clock before it was even registered.

Not saying this has happened here but perhaps another scenario could be that since new the bearings clearances have been on the loose side and it has just worn out .

I take it that the bike isn't an old BMW Offroad Skills bike that spent the first year of it 's life on its side or upside down................... I know of at least one person who owns one and it knocked out its bottom end.

It does happen - a friend of mine had his car serviced and handed back to him with absolutely no oil in it from a main Rover dealer (a few years ago now!). He got about a mile I think.

I don't think we're saying that, just that it's a possibility.

The bit I dont get is that the bike had a full service and the owner was very happy with the result on the way home from the service claiming the bike was transformed and was a happy bunny. It was not untill the next day that the bike sounded bad on a ride out and repeatedly several times thereafter.

How far will a GS go without oil before it dies ? How far did the OP ride the bike home from its service and then how far did he ride it/ run it subsequently ?

Did the OP do anything foolish like check the oil level ???

Maybe the sump plug or the filter weren't done up tight?

That in itself is strange - I've never been able to feel any difference with my bike after a standard service!
