Just got a used nav 5. Dosent seem to hold a charge. Minute I unplug cable battery icon goes to half then quarter. Does the unit take a charge from the mounting when on bike? If so does it matter if the battery is fubar? I’m hoping to use it on my R1250R. Thanks. JJH

depends on how much current the battery is sinking in an attempt to charge

when you have the Nav connected to a laptop, the Nav is not using much current as it is not powering the screen with updates and processing the data from memory and the GPS satellites.

On the road, the Nav is doing all these tasks and trying to charge the battery from a 5V/2A supply in the cradle. If the battery sinks a lot of that 2A as it has a low impedance then the Nav might struggle.

All you can do is try it on a local ride. If it does not work, try disconnecting the battery.

After reading a post on here I rang Garmin and IIRC a replacement was around £13. The nice chap on the phone decided not to charge me and it arrived foc the following day and works a treat so I'd give them a call, though not sure if you have a base located over there or if you ring the UK one?

The uk number is 0808 238 0000
