nav 6 or new connect and ride nav?

Forgive my ignorance as tech not my strong point.. always used the nav 5 or nav 6 been using the nav 6 for years and mainly use it for bike information I do use the nav for directions when required.. I've set up the connect and ride but been away so not had time to try it on the bike yet.. my question is.. I understand I can either use my phone or sd card.. what's the benefits if any of using a sd card? I do have unlimited data on my phone.. so is there a reason why some users insert a sd card.. may be they don't have unlimited date or the wifi signal fails.. just curious of the benefits of a sd card if any?

Also maybe not important to some riders.. but when not using nav for directions I use the nav 6 for bike information I have it set on 4 larger blocks first block are.. GPS SPEED/ENGINE TEMP/FRONT TYRE PRESSURE/REAR TYRE PRESSURE you could use the wonder wheel to scroll through till the 4 blocks of information you have chosen.. it was also easy to put this information in order where it was large enough to read.. I.e the first 4 blocks!

Can't seem to find GPS speed so assume that's no longer available? but can place the information in the order I want.. but can you still scroll through to the first 4 blocks you have chosen which makes the blocks large enough to read?

Do you mean SIM card or SD card? If you mean SIM, it’s so the device can operate independently of a phone. If you mean SD, then it’s to allow sharing of routes and / or hold favourites.

It strikes me that you don’t want or need a navigation device at all. All you want is some display of data as to current (at that moment) state of your bike. Isn’t all of this ‘stuff’ available on the bike’s screen anyway? The bike’s speed certainly is. Do you really need live engine temperature and tyre pressures displayed 24/7/365? How do you live without the oil pressure being displayed and the state of the alternator?

You know this screen will show you front and rear tyre pressure (they appear on the same line as the fuel when the bike starts moving), as well as fuel miles to empty. It’s not as large a font as the Nav V or VI, but still easily readable for me.

Wapping.. You are correct as I don't bother to much with satnav directions unless I'm touring Europe which I use to do every year till covid hit.. but do plan on touring every year again starting next year around Europe so Hence the updated connect and ride sat nav.. I agree the satnav 6 or even my mobile for directions would be Sufficent enough for me.. but I got the connect and ride nav chuck in with the deal when I purchased my r1300 gs.. Not bothered about sim card as I've got unlimited data on my mobile plan.. but may use a sd card if I need more memory.. I don't really bother with temp/oil/volts e.t.c as the bike will tell me if there is a problem.. I do miss the gps speed on the connect and ride nav as my previous r1250 gsa speed was out approx 8 mile per hour at over 70 mph.. if I was showing 80 mph on the tft screen on the r1250 gsa the nav 6 with the gps speed states 72 mph.. can only assume the gps speed is accurate.. Suppose it would be handy to know if the r1300 gs speed was accurate but the connect and ride nav seems not to show gps speed.

Victor c .. Actually I haven't noticed that.. is that something that is set on the motorbike screen setting as standard? as not noticed that.. but I tend to flick through screens fast either to nav/or full bike info.. will check that out next time I'm out for a ride.

Yes, as standard the Motorbike screen displays tyre pressures and miles to empty as standard. I don’t think they can be customised, but as BMW roll out updates, it may be in a future one.

Ref bike displayed speed, 10% over actual speed is normal for most vehicles.

Quite blessed with being located where I am, and taking early retirement means I have plenty of time on my hands to enjoy the best of the roads in the area. If you ever fancy a meet up brew at the Ponderosa, drop me a message.
