NEW ENGINE!

Well I don't know about engine designations but the chaps said I had the new one. The gear change in the lower three gears is transformed - the inevitable clunks are gone, it's sweet. I now have a 24,200 mile bike with an 800 mile engine!

Lucky you. My new engine clunks as badly as ever and neutral is even worse to find.

Groan, what can I say?

And to add to the story . . I replaced the final drive oil this morning (25,000 miles) and on taking off the black plastic splashguard thingy discovered bubbling paint behind its screws. Maybe they paint them first THEN skim the fixing locations and tap the threads. I think I'll leave it for now but go and show my dealer sometime. I guess it's just bound to get worse . Warranty to next April! Anyone out there with a similar bike might want to have a look in the same place; it's well hidden until you take the splashguard off.

UPDATE!!!!!!!!
Nearly run in getting oil changed asap, the Gearbox is VERY smooth the GSAP is even better and with the new Tourance next tyres on bike rides beautifully and the anakee howl has gone, its now 2 years old so I have taken out extended warranty, but I have now fallen even further in love with this bike! :blagblah

The Tourance Next are a noise revelation, Ive done about 1600 miles on mine and so far very pleased. Glad the GSAP and gearbox are better.

Picked her up tonight new engine, drive shaft and bevel! Thank you north oxford motorrad!

Tech took me round the bike and couldn't tell me if the engine is the 2017 or not basically said BMW won't say but the new engine is a different part number! He did say that the engine should not suffer the same issues!

Anyway first gear selection is a doddle and using gear shift assist 1st-2nd is so much better it's unreal!

Cheers again for all the help guys just need to send off my logbook!

You have said it now everyone with a pre-2017 model bike will be looking for the slightest bit of corrosion to get a free upgrade to the new 2017 engine :blasti

I can see it now a queue outside the dealerships to get the new improved motor :D

Well I've got to be honest. I had my engine replaced last week, and compared to the previous one, it's like a different bike.
My bike is an Oct 14 bike and the engine when starting and running has always sounded like someone shaking a can full of hard things !
The shift assist (not a chosen option, just happened to be on the bike never really seemed to quite work right, even after a software upgrade)
Now, the engine is much quieter, and the shift assist works so much better than before. The gearbox is also a huge improvement. Selecting first, first thing in the morning is almost (not quite) as silent as on my 1150 :D
Never the same for the rest of the day strangely, but still a big improvement.

Credit where credit's due, Allan Jefferies have been great to deal with, even though it meant "bypassing" my local dealer just down the road. Big "Thumbs Up" to them.

Maybe we should start a thread with the title of, "Who's got a 13/14 plate bike with an original engine?"
Was queuing for the ferry at Ouistreham last night and spoke to an 1150 GS owner who had a mate who's got an LC and had his engine replaced too. Seems everyone I bump into has had or knows of someone who's had an 'upgrade'

That can't be correct as only less than 100 have ever been replaced

Dick:D, but a good point. I wonder what is the situation world wide regarding replacement engines? If BM will have to replace all 2013/2016 "not fit for purpose engines" that is a lot of engines...

That was a few weeks ago. It now turns out that over a million engines have been replaced.:D

I've not read of any replacement engines anywhere other than the UK, certainly none in the US (on the advrider forum) from what I've seen.

Maybe its a misprint in the UK hand book service schedule it should say

Change Engine Oil at 6000 miles or 12 months

and someone forgot to print the word Oil in the uk version of the book :D

A pal of mine has had his engine replaced here in Ireland, he is waiting on word back to see if the swing arm and final drive will be replaced as well. All rotten, my May 2015 is currently corrosion free, but rarely goes out in the wet and lives under a blanket with a dehumidifier so I am hopeful !!!

Another little angle on this story. I will probably be buying a used Adventure in the next year or two.............I will be definitely be looking for one that has had it's engine changed from this current batch onward!!!

Out of interest where did you get the number of 1 million replacement engines ?
I feel really left out, my 2013 GS isn't corroded, changes gear smoothly, goes into neutral ok. What's wrong with it !

What make you think the engines are going back to the factory ? They may have had a few to start with but not anymore.

Hello there, I am new to the site and a little disturbed with regards to the engine corrosion issues. Please advise me without taking the p+++.
I have just bought a gs 1200 te '63' plate with 2k on clock and it is a minter. This bike was a private sale from someone who has cherished it and there are no signs of the dreaded yet.
Is this one of the bike likely to effected?.
I have been handed transferable bmw warranty paperwork valid until May 2018 that I need to send to BMW as the new owner. UNtil now I have always been a fair wether man but intend to ride every season from now on but concerned about what has been said on here.
Do you advise any protection for the engine?, is acf 50 the way forward or do I just leave it alone and make a claim before the end of the warranty period.
As the bike is 3 years old now will it be too late to make a claim or will my warranty cover do and cover me through to 2018 for corrosion.
As I say I am new to this site, may sound a bit thick but this is my first ever BMW, so keen to have one yet stuff on here is very concerning.
Thankyou in advance for advice. Regards Dave

The way I see BMW's reaction is that the majority of LC's out there are on PCP? As let's face it who's got 17k floating around!

As they are on PCP the owners don't care as much as the bike is going back to BMW anyway! BMW to save having to recall them if you make the slightest bit of noise the change everything! It makes sense as like Nice "N" Fat says they have changed less than 100! I have come to this conclusion as 5 good friends have them and only 1 other is having a new engine as he too owned his bike and the rest don't care, there bikes are out of manufacturing warranty so don't see the point in paying labour!

BMW just don't want to foot the bill or own up to a recall!

That can't be correct as only less than 100 have ever been replaced

It obviously depends on whether the owner complains as about 1/3 of the used GS LC's in my local BMW dealers have corrosion on their engines, particularly on top of the engine block next to the cylinders (where my new engine is already showing the white flecks through the paintwork on one side)
