New lid time

Hi all

I'm canvassing for opinions on lids. I'm currently using a Shoei XR1000 which has been great but is getting a bit long in the tooth and it's time for a change.

Thinking along the lines of a dual sport like a Tour X or a Hornet DS. Or if I decide I don't need the peak maybe a Shoei GT Air.

I ride 12 miles to work and back every day rain or shine so would like to know how the dual sports fair in a downpour and through the winter. Do they let a lot of cold air up and under? Some reviews I've read have mentioned leaks, others have said that they're great.

I've tried a Hornet on and it fitted nicely and felt good but I had an Arai Quantum a way back and that was very nice inside. Tour X is top end of budget.

Any comments gratefully received.

I have a GT Air, a Hornet and an old Tour X. For commuting, I'd have the GT Air. The only caveat is that if you're a spectacle wearer they're prone to making those mist up, especially if you have the front portion of the Whisper Kit, i.e. the wind guard under the chin, fitted.
 
Thanks guys. Don't wear specs so no problem with fogging up. I have a foggy respro fitted to the XR1000 as I didn't like the framing effect of the pinlock insert.

The GT Air gets good write ups for being quiet and light which I like.

You don't say what bike you have? I have a GSA with Standard screen 5ft 11 (all of which makes a difference) I have a GT Air cracking helmet but I miss the lever that let's you crack the visor open a nat like the xr1000, also find that in warm weather on the GSA don't get a lot of air in through chin vent, due to size of screen. Have been thinking about a duel sport for that very reason the Hornet seems to have a massive chin vent but not tried one yet?

I'm on a GSA with a standard screen as well, and also 5ft 11. I've just (today) fitted a Touratech screen extender and first impressions are favourable. Riding with the visor up was bugging me as it appeared to be in turbulent air and was buzzing a bit. This made me a bit reluctant to try a DS lid as I thought the peak might vibrate in the same way.

With the extender fitted I rode home tonight with the visor open the whole way, no buzzing and no wind in my eyes.

Still wonder if the dual sport lids will let in too much cold air in the winter. I think the Hornet comes with a chin curtain.

Any other suggestions?
 
Try before you buy

I was suprised to try on the different models of Shoei at Hemet City recently, i also had a xr1000, wanted the new sports
one, however after trying them all on in my size, the one i bought was xr1100 in Italian colours to suit my Aprilia RSVR:D
 
I love my X-Lite 551, Peak is great, construction is top notch, drop down sunvisor is deepest I've had and it comes with a pinlock etc. I bought the N-Com bluetooth kit from Ebay Italy, saving £100 on the UK price and it's blooming good to.

You have got this far choosing several of your own helmets, carefully listed.

Carry on in the same vein... It's your head, your wallet, your GSA 'look', your commute, your..... nobody else's

I found the GT Air not a quiet as the hype and now have a Tour X4 which for me is much quieter
 
Last week I got a shoei gt air from lidsdirect . With their normal discount and an extra 10% for that weekend it arrived at £338 . It's very very quiet .

I tried a Shoei full face on. It didn't fit.

I tried a BMW flip front on. It didn't fit.

I tried an Arai full face on. It fitted.

I tried a Shoei flip front on. It fitted.

Should I be worried?


PS It's easy to explain why. BMW size their flip fronts differently to others. If you look at the sizing numbers, they are something like 47-49, 49-51, 51-53 - Others, like Arai go summat like 46-48, 48-50, 50-52. One up in odd increments, the other in evens. If, by chance, you have a mellon, that is exactly an even size, the odd sized helmet is very probably not going to fit comfortably, ever. You can muck around a bit with the cheek pads etc but there is also a shell size change, somewhere in the range of numbers, meaning that some pads.... And hence helmets.... just will not fit.

Try lots on and chose the one that fits YOU. It's you that's maybe going to be wearing it for the next five or more years.

Yes, there's at least 2 helmet manufacturers out to get you :eek:
 
Shoei Neotec suits me very well and I ride almost everyday throughout the year.

Fair point, but if by reading a few other people's view points I can make a more considered decision then all well and good. I hadn't looked at the X-Lite mentioned.
