Hello,

I am new to this forum and new to the world of BMW GS's.

I have recently purchased an old (1995) 1100 after a few years off bikes.

Ive only had it a few weeks, and have been reading a lot about the problems with the final drives, universal joints, bearings etc.

My bike which has covered 33,000 miles makes a clunking noise on pull away which disapears once moving. Concerned that it may be the universal joint or something in the final drive I decided to dismantle the doings and have a look.

Upon inspection it all looks new, far too new for a 17 year old bike. All the swivel bearings are perfect, the UJ is perfect in fact I cant find a fault. So I can only presume that it has had some new parts.

My question therefore is.....What is making this noise and will it kill me suddenly at 70 mph.

Many thanks in advance

Steve.

You have ABS? If so it is the start up test. Ride and enjoy

1100's

At thirty thousand miles it 'aint even run in and should look like new!

So its the ABS? im not convinced, it doesnt make the noise until I pull away and it makes it every time I pull away not just the first time. It is a very mechanical crunching sound and is fairly loud, similar to a missed gear noise.
Can it only be the ABS or is there anything else worth checking just to be on the safe side.

I got my 1150 last year and for the first 3000 miles i was convinced that it was gonna fall to bits.they really do make some crazy noises, without splitting the bike in half,or actually seeing/riding it there is not much anyone on the site can do to help. But they will if they can(or hurl abuse at you,but its all in good taste)
There are a lot of clever sods on here to help us mortals out.

Oh and welcome

Everytime you pull away from standstill (junction etc) ABS2 on a 1100GS 'arms' itself and is a mechanical clunk

I was there first:D
In that case you get a Gold star and go to the top of the class - even though you ride a Honda ;)

Does sound like ABS but the clunking associated with that usually only occurs when first setting off , or when bike has been stationary for a couple of minutes (like waiting at a tedious traffic light...) and reaching a speed of ~4mph. If it happens every time you set off from a stop I would think it may be something else.

As an example, my driveway is about 20 metres and the clunking happens about half way up the drive when I set off, but it won't happen when I pull to a halt at main road junction around 1.5Km away and then set off again.

Hope that is of some help....

I'm pretty certain he will be correct:thumb2

Ride and enjoy,as someone has said at that mileage it's just about run in.

Do a search on gearbox "hardparts".

I pulled the shaft out at 34000 miles to replace the fd bearing and for a bit of a look... It too looked perfect with no signs of wear... so no worries... I expect your bike is fine and original!

Of course you only read about the problems.

I rode to work today and back again - nothing went wrong. Same yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that as well, and the day...............

You get the picture - not very newsworthy is it?

The 1100 is a really well engineered bike with only 78bhp. Assuming it's led a fairly quiet life then the drive train will be in as new condition at that sort of mileage.

Just change the oils, whack a new battery in if needed, and ride it. Alternatively if it still worries you then I'm prepared to offer you £5 and a bag of conkers to take it off your hands... ;)

if its the abs "clunk" its the same noise u get when u first start it and get up to about 10 mph when the lights go out

if u stop later say at trafic lights it will rearm (abs lights will be off at this stage) it will clunk again

well it does on mine

The simple way to determine whether this noise is the ABS or not is to DISABLE IT.

then if the noise vanishes - you have your answer.

disable it in this manner:

With the bike at a standstill - switch off the ignition.
press the ABS 'shut-off' button and hold it down.

(the shut-off button is the top black button to the left of the 'idiot lights' cluster)

Switch on the ignition - while continuing to hold down the shut-off button.

release the button.

The ABS is now out of action
the ABS warning lights flash in the same rhthym to remind you the ABS has been disabled.

Ride away... if the noise that concerns you is still apparent - report back. If it vanishes - you have your answer.

to reengage the ABS - simply turn off the ignition - then turn it on again.

simple.
