So, as mentioned i seem to have bought an R1100GS.

Went to view last week, black 98/R, 113,000 mls. It is cosmetically challenged but nothing to be to concerned about.

Went to collect this morning, thought it would be either kill or cure re the gout but I really needed to get out!!!

First impression on the 14 mile ride home.

The engine is a stonker. Really, really smooth, and quiet.
The gearbox. It was overhauled at Bath rd Motorcycles a couple of years ago. I have the receipt, basically new input shaft/clutch, the usual. They did renew forks/bearings as well and the gearbox is real peachy! Thats the one main worry that i had when looking for one so, no worries there!

The disc bobbins are rattling, I need to take a look at them in a bit of detail, whats the worse? I have rattled them & looks like bobbins and washers will do the trick.

The ABS is not working. Its ABS2 so shouldn't be a major issue, but if the controller is furked i'll take it off!

Heated grips are knackered, worn right through, worse ive ever seen!

Its a bit 'scabby', especially the engine. I took a 'pile' of paint off it today! hey ho.

Tyres (well rear) shot. I have just picked up a set of nearly new TKC's from Drillam, so no worries there either.

It really just needs a bit of TLC, well OK a lot of TLC, but all in all its a decent bike!

There was a big wedge of paperwork so I just went through it.

All MOT's présent.

BMW service history up till 90k, last owner bought BMW service kit and did the last 2 himself.

Loads of BMW bills.

It also has an Acumen alarm (dont know what they are like but if it ails its going in the bin!)

2 keys/alarm fobs.

GIVI top box and 1 system pannier (other one was knocked off in traffic!)

I think I'm going to be happy with it!

First pic, when i got it home

Must do something with that screen, years of road grime and flies....

Just need to get some advice off MikeP ref cleaning up the headers!

I think for a first clean its not come up too bad. Wheels need a bit more work but will come back.

I really think there is something to be said for not cleaning a bike, i'm sure it leaves a protective film over most things, shame it didnt work with the handlebars!!

More to follow...

Steve.

Nice one :D Mine cleared up well from a rough old state. Took me a year to get it as I wanted but its been well worth it. Keep your eye in the For Sale section for bits and pieces to improve what you can't clean up.

It's all looking great , and the paint is in great order , you will have lots of fun getting her back in fine order ,

Crikey! That's a nice project, mate. And I bet you'll love every minute of it :D

Best of luck and hope it all goes well :thumb2

you can do better than that , send it down to mike it will come back as bright as a new pin:D:D:D

nice wee project what did you pay for it if you dont mind me asking :)

I paid very, very slightly north of the engine cc :D:D

Take it off & stick it in the dishwasher, it'll come up all clean & sparkly :thumb2

Did that with my screen after Bilco's Alaska trip & it took off 8,500 miles worth of America & Canada's finest wildlife......

In fact, lots of bits come up sparkly in the dishwasher :D

Obviously goes without saying, don't do it when the mem'sabs around :green gri

Whatever You Do!!!!!

Change the brake hoses
At that age the front in particular are prone to ballooning and worst case scenario busting and spoiling your day big style
DAMHIK :-)

Smudger - looks like you know 1100's as your profile says you have an RT. But just in case this thread covers the issues I've had, and also those that seem to be fairly common.

Top front brake hose is a must. £33 from BMW. Mine went when I was close to home but was braking from speed going towards a roundabout. It could have ended very badly if there had been any more traffic around. Steptoe has a thread on it:

I'd check the battery if the ABS is playing up. If it's less than perfect then the ABS will keep "failing".

Although I don't mention it in the thread, an MRA screen makes a huge difference to the bike. Not cheap but worth every penny.

Sounds like a great service history - see if the stuff I list has already been fixed. Especially the clutch actuator.

Otherwise enjoy it. Looks fine to me - we ought to have an 1100 meet somewhere in the South. Any decent bike friendly caff's around the Hants/Wilts borders?

Hi Felters, thanks for the advice mate.

I normally do a breakfast run out to Compton Abbas airfield, poss in a couple of weeks, i'll stick thread up & we can catch up!

:thumb2

Fair play to you :thumb2 looks a lot better already. Strange that previous owners would keep all MOTs and service records yet wouldn't think to give the poor old bike a wash once in a while! Good luck with it!

I did think that, but each to there own?

The fellow I bought it from used it every day, summer or winter, as a commuter bike. His wife said she had to 'drag' him off it one day in thick snow!

He has bought an 1150GSA, its a real clean one too, hate to think what that will look like in a few years!

SEATS

Got these with the bike.

Front seat needs recovering in the centre but look OK!

Anyone know of a seat upholsterer near Bath? I did a google search but drew a blank...
