NEW TOY

Nice one - underneath the crud you will find these things are mechanically sound. Bit of a wire brushing for the barrels and slap on some silver smoothrite and you will be amazed at how well it will look.

I managed to grab a pair of new rocker covers off Ebay for £58 delivered - that and the paint made all the difference.

Smudger - looks like you know 1100's as your profile says you have an RT. But just in case this thread covers the issues I've had, and also those that seem to be fairly common.

Top front brake hose is a must. £33 from BMW. Mine went when I was close to home but was braking from speed going towards a roundabout. It could have ended very badly if there had been any more traffic around. Steptoe has a thread on it:

I'd check the battery if the ABS is playing up. If it's less than perfect then the ABS will keep "failing".

Although I don't mention it in the thread, an MRA screen makes a huge difference to the bike. Not cheap but worth every penny.

Sounds like a great service history - see if the stuff I list has already been fixed. Especially the clutch actuator.

Otherwise enjoy it. Looks fine to me - we ought to have an 1100 meet somewhere in the South. Any decent bike friendly caff's around the Hants/Wilts borders?

Room for one more 1100?...i'm not too far away in Somerset :D

I'm sure we can squeeze you in - it's the Canbus and Water Cooled lot that worry me...

Have a good look at the oil return pipe, goes down the left front of the engine to the sump, looks rotten as a carrot and could quickly be terminal for the engine if it springs a leak.

Good buy though:thumb2

nice one Smudger
got room for a little un on yer breakie runs? I need to get out more on mine.

how did you clean your wheels? mine are shite

Compton Abbas airfield? 7 miles from my house that is. Might be up for a brekkie run one day. My old 1150 GS seems to have been stuck at 80k for ages so needs a run.

Mine looked dreadful, corroded and pitted, I wire brushed it and sprayed it too, it is pretty thick walled steel pipe. :thumb

Top spot for a brekkie and just down the road from Compton is Henstridge. IMHO a much nicer place to go, super cooked breakfast and lots of creaky old sofa's and arm chairs to sit on. Enjoy the delights of the occasional visit from Britain's oldest pilot flying in with his ex WW2 twin engine light bomber and marvel at his miracle landings!

I'd like to tart up my beloved R1100 GS. What is this smoothrite of which you speak and what other cleaning products are proven winners on the engine/wheels etc?
