New year, new project bike

Thanks 👍. It’s not progressing as fast as I’d like due to work getting in the way, but there’s no real rush. All the cables arrived from Venhill on Friday so that’s probably the next job before tackling the electrics

Ta dah, front light and indicators. The box of parts that still need fitting is getting ever more empty. Soon be onto the electrics (that’s where it will all go wrong🫣)

Just serviced mine and had the MOT ready for a trip to Scotland next week. Can’t get over how similar the bikes look.

Little bit more progress to report, nothing fancy just the plate to go under the tool case IMG_0453.jpegIMG_0492.jpeg

Without the rack behind the seat, how does the seat mount so that it is secure?

great project, looks lovely

I made some special brackets to pick up the threaded holes in the seat base and brazed on some threaded buttons for the bolts to attach to. Simples (but fiddly getting the alignment spot on)

Final mechanical jobs completed, front brake line, clutch cable, choke cables, throttle cables. Now for the electrics……😳IMG_0584.jpeg

Has anyone got a photo showing the layout of the electrical components along the top frame rail of an 87-90 R80GS (without the big fairing)? I was hoping to just mirror the layout on my 1996 R80GS Basic, but the project bike is a 1998 model which has some differences (e.g different loom and switchgear). Any help appreciated.

This is the mounting layout on my bike

That’s looking really lovely.
sorry I cannot help wih the wiring routing, but I’m sure someone will be along shortly to assist.

keep the updates coming please.

No photos but,
The main loom runs down the left of the frame rail, with the electrical connectors looping under it to the components.
The rear light harness connector should sit about level with the l/h subframe fixing.
The front of the main loom exits through the front of the frame and passes under the lower yoke, between the front mudguard fixings into the headlamp binnacle.
The handle bar switch gear wiring passes down behind the handle bars, through the headstock triangulation, along the top tube where the electrical connectors fit into the metal bracket on the front R/h.
The clutch and front brake light switch wiring follows the switch gear wiring.
The relays fit into the bracket on the R/h rear with the wiring also looping under from the left.

Mikey you’re a superstar thanks👍

Electrics are progressing nicely now thanks to the intel from Mikeyboy. I do need some help with a relay though……

Can anyone give me a part number and source for the headlight relay (97-90 R80GS paralever). They are NLA from BMW and Motorworks are out of stock. They look like a fairly bog standard relay but which one??? Any advice appreciated
