Hi,

I know this has probably been asked a million times (or not)? So here we go,
I have just purchased my 1st BMW motorbike (1997 1100gs with 36000 on the clock) after riding a multitude of jap & italian bikes. 1st impressions are good. My questions are a follows:

1, How much oil is required for a oil + Filter change? (dont have a handbook)
2, I have owned BMW cars in the past and i have a oil filter tool that fits the bike which made me wonder if there is a car filter that will fit?
3, I have read car oil can be used in these bikes? Is this correct? It would be handy as i have a halfords trade card & can purchase the oil filter cheaper & most importantly during my lunch break today:).

Thank you in adance for your help.

Oil is a smidge less than 4 litres.
No idea about car filter.
Do a search for posts about oil, but set aside a few weeks to read them all:D

E30 oil filter.

any 10/40 or 20/50 will do the job - SG spec and up- depends on whats on special.

So is this fine for it ■ACEA-A3, B3 and API-SL, CF?

SL is newer than SG so you should be fine with that, although I stand to be corrected.

Good choice of bike - what colour - is it the fastest/smoothest/coolest kalahari yellow? (that isn't weewee green at all :D )

Welcome and enjoy the best GS:thumby:

Not sure about the oil filter tool being the same but there is one for the bike.

I just did engine oil, FD and gearbox oil changes. I used a mineral 20/50 oil API SL spec, £20 for 5l.

For the FD and gearbox I used SX75W-90 GL-5 Semi-Synthetic Gear Oil, £7 per litre (you need just over 1 litre).

Have you always used a mineral oil? I have always used a semi-synthetic - it does use a bit of oil.
Do you think it' would make any difference if I changed now (after 107,xxx miles) to save a few quid.

Not another oil question :blast
