Never put one on my bike as had them stolen in the past. Normally never that far away from the bike anyway so keep it in my wallet. The Police can check if it's taxed on their computer and never had any problem doing this so far.

Failing to display is an offence, and yer local traffic warden has no access to the details held on the DVLA system, you will get a ticket if he/she spots no disc.
