Has anyone subscribed to the Numaps lifetime update offered by Garmin. Details seem a little sketchy but I wondered if it meant lifetime updates to City Navigator, on a quarterly basis. If so it seems good value. Anyone using it yet?

You only get up-dates for the GPS unit you register them for. So if you sell the GPS and buy a newer one you've lost your lifetime up-grades :)

I realise that:). The question was whether anyone is yet using the service. It seems very good value, almost too good to be true and as we both have Zumos no plan to change the units for some time to come.

No.

IIRC unless you keep the gps for more than 3 years it's not cost effective, unless you absolutely must have only 3 month old mapping.

I have bought it for my Nav III.

Garmin is releasing a new map set every year (or so it seems) and even though most of the changes are to places I probably won't go, I felt it better value to buy the lifetime maps rather than pay for them every time.

Am I using it yet? Yes.

Yes, it's quarterly updates, that can be downloaded to as many PC's as you like but can only be tied to one GPS device. So, lose your device or change or run two or more GPS's you will have to cough up again.

The downloads take about two hours on a reasonably fast broadband connection. They come in two stages:

(1) Garmin down to your PC, for two hours.

(2) Your PC to the GPS device, for another two hours.

If you load the maps onto a second (or third, or fourth....) PC you have to repeat both stages again, each time.

The dowloads seem to be reliable. There is a very long pause when the PC first unpacks the downloaded file. Just be patient, it may appear to have gone into a deepsulk but it hasn't.

Good value? Only you can judge.

Thanks for the information, especially about the computer appearing to go to sleep. I have been trying to update Elvie's Zumo for the first time, and I have downloaded the update to the PC, and it is over 3 gigs in size. I tried to load it onto the Zumo forgetting that the installed memory is only 2 gigs, and surprise surprise the error message stating not enough memory came up. Anyone else having similar problems? I'm just wondering if I'm doing anything wrong before inserting an SD card and trying again.

There is no problem sending the Numaps from the PC to a Zumo 550. I, as a complete pc numpty, have done it at least five times. It just takes time. I often just go out, as it avoids me looking at it every five minutes, wondering what is going on.

The file that is downloaded from Garmin may well be over 3 gigs, but the components (if that is the right word) that get sent from the pc to the Zumo are under 2 gig. From memory, if I go into properties and look at the Zumo's internal disc it shows about 1.85 gig used.

I can only suppose that the 'missing' element is data that used by the pc (routing, 'talking' garmin / the gps device etc. etc. or lumps of other mysterious housekeeping or magic) and is not sent on to the Zumo as it is not needed.

Are you sure that you are not trying to send the maps from your PC to a data card in your Zumo? If so, it is quite possible that it will not fit. Why? I can only guess that the data card is not receiving an instruction to delete map or other files that may already be there and is simply trying to lump the Numaps on top, overlaoding its limit.

Maybe remove the card in the Zumo and try again? It's a slow process and often nothing seems to happen... which sometimes prompts one to click on the icons, so starting the whole process twice.... leave it to do its stuff slowly and all should be well.

Problem solved after a telephone call to Garmin support. They advised me to remove all voices from the unit other than those I wanted to keep. Deleting all but the English voices saved over 350 megabytes disc space, and lo and behold the mapping software then installed. Now I've only got mine to do! Thanks for all the advice.

Out of interest, have you successfully installed any of the maps from the numaps service on your Nav III yet? Some people have had trouble installing from downloads.

My brother subscribes to numaps for his Zumo, but can only get it to install on an SD card, the maps in the unit's memory have been corrupted.

I have bought it for my Nav III.
