Sorted. You can call any time Thursday evening. I won't be watching the footy - I always bring bad luck to whatever team I support, so it's safer for me not to watch the England game.

I think it's god's way of telling me "don't watch football, go and ride bikes instead". Seems to have done me OK so far.

Checking legality..........what a f***ing s****e system that is. Can check BOATS (some) free at County, green lanes it's either pay £15 a go, or sit for hours with books.
Open book democracy my arse I will rely on :-
a) the maps
b) a list kindly researched by those in the know
c) Join TRF as they need all the support they can get
(I've been meaning to join for an age, so nows a good time - anyone else ?)

Rant f***ing rant f***ing rant - argh no wonder there is so much illegal riding.

To reinforce, we'll only use legal routes.

Although it's not the official way to go about things, the way I spot lanes is to paw over the maps for hours on end, then go out and try to ride them. If there's even the slightest whiff of some landowner or NIMBY having a claim to stop vehicular use, then there will be a sign on the lane or track.

If I get there and there isn't a sign, I ride it and if I manage to get the the other end without getting stuck or hitting a chained gate, I mark it as a doable lane / track on the map.

If you've ridden the lanes already and not seen signs to say 'get off my land' them you're ok.

Obviously if there is a sign, you have to make a judgement about how official it looks, balanced with the 'likelihood that the lane will be any good'. The opposite ends of the scale are 'a tatty cardboard sign at the start of a cracking lane' and 'an official sign and an official banning order at the start of a peatbog'. BTW you don't want to sink your GS in a peat bog, DAMHIKT!

The downside of this approach is that you sometimes ignore stuff on the map that is marked as a footpath, but is actually a cracking lane - that's where TRF membership comes in.

And how do we find out if a lane has a TRO on it?

Official TRO signs on a few trails in Peak District have been vandalised/stolen. I was prevented from "committing a crime" by chatting to a ranger.

It ****s me off that it isn't easy to check.......and then they complain about illegal use. The majority of these have or had 'unsuitable for mototr' signs, so OK

Spout, that TRO business. When I went to check the legailty issues I went to PROW (Public Rights of Way) and they were great, the 'roads' (includes green lanes) were another section and that was the difficulty, pretty hopeless as they charge, and were just not willing to help easily without payment.
The local divisional surveyor might be a point on contact as they put up the notices for temporary closures, and the County say they don't get these details (what a ****ing joke this open book democracy malarky is).
The only way I found out two of the trails that would have been good 'links' were closed was on site (luckily notices still in place).
On my own, I go were I want, as the GS two up can't exactly cause much damage or nuissance (in my mind).
Of course for this little venture I will use the 'legal' route.

No bloody wonder there is such misuse is all I can say - god bless the TRF etc etc. Now were's me cheque book

The plan (details will be emailed & posted w/e before too) is to meet in Thirsk’s Millgate Coach Park – away from any coaches (behind market place, near St Mary's church http://www.hambleton.gov.uk/hambleton/transport.nsf/pages/thirsk_car.html OS Grid SE428823) at 10am for 10.15 off.
There are many establishments in Thirsk centre that open at 9am that will provide breakfast, at least 5 I know of, (Sunday an hour later !) Do not park in coach park though – there is free m/c parking opposite side of the road from the town clock in market place, but mind the bollards. Saturday there is a market so town centre is busy.
We'll leave town 10.15 sharp for a short sample ride of few miles to ensure everyone is happy, then we'll be off over towards Whitby via the trails (and a fair bit of tarmac). We'll stop at the Lion Inn, Blakey for lunch. We'll be back to Thirsk at some point that afternoon / evening !

Sunday I'm happy for another ride out, though this might be more 'interesting' as I may not have been able to pre-ride a route - ie spirit of adventure !!

Simon has kindly offered his and Georgie’s help with the ride (Bev and I will be at front, so it's good to have help). If anyone else wishes to help please say, particularly if you have experience of the moors.

For those who like to camp I think Simon’s suggestion of Sleningford Watermill is good. (http://www.ukparks.co.uk/sleningford/) Not too far away, say 15 mins, and coupla good pubs nearish by. There will be accommodation in village and area too, but I haven’t details, for other options try :-

Just for info, the ride w/e is also Thirsk (horse) Races, so the campsite there would - I expect - be closed.
The races are pretty popular so be aware, accommodation + cafes etc busy - pubs VERY busy but not first thing am, ceratinly not pubs (hopefully coach park won't be full, if is, anywhere in parking is fine, should be room round and about for congregating).

Beach - judge on the day, would be good for a photo, but best afore we leave I guess . If nice weather the 'shed' coffee stop, if wet, Witts End. Prey for sun - Witts End is costly (but very good). Easier than going in to Whitby for parking etc.

Yep the pub next to the bridge in Tanfield - We'll be in there from 8 or 9 - depending on how the motorway / tent pitching / tipping down with rain situation is. The pub is small (most of the space is reserved for dining) but the beer garden overlooking the river is good, as is the beer.

Assuming everyone doesn't want to dump all their luggage I should be able to get stuff in our garage. But remember - the folk who leave their stuff will have to ensure both they, and us, get back to Thirsk though !!!! Usual excluders on loss etc etc.
We can ride round and dump any stuff on way out (not enough parking near enough our house to meet there)
