Oil (Argghhh!)

http://www.nielsencdg.co.uk/ will have stocks very soon. Price likely to be 8.89 for 1 litre,2 litres 8.45 litre and 3 litres 8.00 litre all + vat @15%. Or so they told me a few weeks ago ...
Has anyone got a reasonably priced online supplier for the latest bmw recommendation, castrol power 1 10w50. It seems to contain unobtanium.

I heard Duckhams have stopped producing mineral 20/50.
A friend of mine uses it in his R100.

Fuchs produce a 10W50 which I've been using for the last 4 years to top-up between services (see http://www.fuchs-silkolene.com/race.html , unfortunately in German). My supply was obtained before I bought the GS so I've no idea of the current cost of it. Alternatively, Halfords list an own-brand 5W50 fully synthetic oil or Mobil 15W50, again fully synthetic.

The HG oil is in the sale at the Farnborough branch, so probably also part of the sale items at other branches too. If you're signed up for their newsletter you get a voucher which gets you a further discount
So does this mean my 1 year old BMW manual for my 1 year old BMW motorcycle is now wrong as per BMW?
So, if my engine blows up and BMW won't cover the warranty as I used 20/50 as per the manual instead of this weeks recommendation of 10/50 I'm screwed?
Sorry, but I think this is ridiculous and is BMW in cahoots with Castrol utilising cartel practices to increase profits. They make a deal for 6 months exclusive supply at inflated prices, then when the distribution channel has caught up they change the recommended oil and start another 6 month "deal" with Castrol.
I bought stacks of Castrol Act 4 20/50 and thats what my manual says I need so that's what I'm using.

They've just changed the oil spec recently - progress to a better product.

£9 for 1 litre of oil? And you have to travel god knows how far to a BMW dealer to get it.

I'm on my 4th GS, admittedly the others weren't 1200's but I've never used 10/50. The current bike is heading toward 80,000 miles having mostly run on Halfords 10/40 semi-synth apart from when it was running in. It seems to have led a happy life on it with no obvious engine wear related problems.
The question ought to be why is there a new spec' and what's different, not where can I buy it as it may simply be BMW are making life easier by suggesting a "one oil fits all" approach to cover climate zones from scandinavia to spain, wheras in realtively cool Blighty our bikes don't really need the equivelant grade to a 50wt oil at high temperatures because it's always raining. What is important are the other specifications of this latest recommended oil and how that compares with what went before.
In addition, it's not entirely clever to bung in any old oil just because it says 10/50 on the tin. It may for example have a poorer ability to protect the engine than the 'old' 20/50 if it's not up to the required spec'.

I would imagine 10/40 semi synth or indeed and decent quality oil would be just fine, but, when it goes in for a service it's going to be done using the new recommended oil. Probably best to top up using similar grade.
If I was servicing it myself I would probably stick with the 10/40.
Incidentally, my bike is just over two months old and the handbook still says 20/50 is the recommended grade.....

Been to Gericke's today in Manchester. They have got loads of the new 10/50 own label stuff- says fully synthetic and for race or road use.
Best thing is it was priced up at £21.99, but when I got to the till it was reduced at £14.99.
I usually pay £10+VAT for 5 litres of 20/50 Unipart mineral oil for my 1150 and was looking for semi 20/50 expecting it to cost a fortune- was pleasantly suprised when I saw this.
Bit of a bargain if you ask me.

i have acquired 5 gallons of fuchs titan 15w/40 hpe diesel / gasoline oil , it's designed for big earth movers i.e. volvo , cat , jcb etc , thinking of puting it in my high mileage 1150 ,,, any thoughts ????

Power might be down as the fuel pump might struggle to pump it. Should help prevent corrosion within the fuel system too.
