I have been trawling through the site but I can't find the answer, Has anyone found an oil filter that is the same as the one used on the F650/800, it would be handy and probably cheaper to go the motor parts factors that are almost next door to me, all I need is a part number that I can match up.

A certain Renault one will physically fit and thread on and is the same dimensions but it isn't the same design inside.

Thanks for the info but I will use the genuine one if I can't find an exact match, I would be surprised if only BMW use that filter so there is probably a pattern version out there somewhere.

You can also get a Mann, a Hi-Flo, or a K and N replacement oil filter.
Mann and K and N also make replacement air filters, the K and N will last longer than you own the bike.

You won't get an 'exact match' unless you go for the OEM one.......if you really want it exact down to the internal layout :blast

As long as it's the right thread and size, deals with as much (or higher) flow rate as OEM and has filtering properties to match the engine requirements, it should be a good enough match, and will still be a lot cheaper than the OEM one :nenau

An oil filter is a fairly basic thing, with a few parameters that need to be met.....internal design surely isn't one of them

There are plenty of cortina owners with the 1.6 ohc engine who would disagree. JJH

If that was a comment on what I said about the filter replacement, I have no knowledge of the problem they had , but it sounds like the filter wasn't up to requirements if they uprated the engine or something :nenau

As long as it matches or exceeds OEM parameters (and doesn't go too far the other way like a poorly maintained K&N air filter does) then how can it not be a better choice?

It may not have the BMW stamp on it, and I know a lot of people pay dearly for that "privilege", but if it does the job, it does the job :nenau

Sorry I wasn't getting at you at all I worked in a motor factors at the time about 1981 and the part no in motorcraft was efl 89 but at that time people did not relaise that there was a valve in the filter to stop the oil draining out when the engine was stopped. Enter a geninous who discovers that other filters would fit including the efl 90 which did not have a valve so every time the engine was started the first vital seconds were spent filling the filter instead of rushing around to the various important parts. How much do you save by using pattern filters instead of OEM?
Is it worth the risk for what can only be a small saving?

Guess that depends on the saving, frequency of changes and miles covered.

@ £2 saving per change, every three thousand miles at 12,000 a year is eight whole pounds! Enough for 5.8 litres of fuel... which gets me 75 miles.

How depressing.

Best buy genuine then as I only change the filter every 8000...

Well thanks for all the responses, I will make sure I get the right filter if i can find a cortina to buy that is still running !!

I am not really looking to save any money as they are not so expensive that they will break the bank, it's more about the convenience of popping into the motor factors that is less than 100 metres away, I get a good discount so I would save some money and I don't have to pay postage or ride to the BMW dealer that is shut on my day off. I would only buy the pattern filter if I was sure it was an exact match, if not I will get them from Motobins or Lind Motorrad.

So you are after the BMW part number ?

Something like 11427719357 ?

I'm suprised some people do not make ther own out of a Bean can :blast small hole suck the beans out dont waste them (meal and a filter), take the lable off bit of Halfords heat paint or some old boot polish

buying a 7 thousand pound + bike you surely could save a few pennies on making a bodged up effort :nenau

some might think the savings are small beans or it's just a half baked Idea :D

What risk?

Yes, what risk?

Around 35 years ago, Motor magazine had a Triumph Stag which went in for a service, and a spurious filter was used.
The Engine seized, and the filter manufacturer put up his hands and paid for the complete repairs to the car.

When the first Honda Civics came out people bought non listed filters which fitted perfectly. Unfortunately, the oil flowed the opposite direction through them, and the internal rubber flap cut off the oil to the engine, but the oil light went out.
There were dozens seized before word got out.

Having listed the disasters, I havn't heard of a recommended spurious filter causing engine damage since the Stag failure.

This could become a "What Filter" thread of similar proportions to the "What Oil" thread which still runs sporadially on this site, and is frequented by persons whom Albert Einsten suggested had been given a large brain by mistake, since for them the spinal cord would suffice.

I use pattern oil and air filters myself ones that are listed for the patulicar application and I would not guess one to use just because it looked "right" JJH

I used a Champion filter last time round - I think it was the one for a K series bike - cost me £6.00 from Halfords which is just round the corner from me rather than a tenner from CW which is 25 miles away ...

The filter media in Champion filters is reputed to be at the top end of the market so I'd have no problem doing it again. The only difference was that the filter was about an inch longer than the OE item - not a problem on my old bike as I had a Metal Mule sump guard on it which had enough room to accommodate it, but it might be a little more obvious on bikes with an OE bash plate.
