Oil filter, prime or not ?

To give a definitive answer to my own question & for anyone interested, I'm informed that an empty filter stays empty until the oil pump is driven.

When I do a oil & filter change I fill the filter with oil before fitting it, does anyone know for sure if this is necessary.

Not "absolutely" necessary, but since there is no disadvantage to doing so, why wouldn't you? You might as well give the lubrication system a head start.
