Does anyone know how far down the sight glass the oil level has to drop before the light comes on the dash please. mine has used a little bit and the light came on, but there is still plenty in it.

Good question I have had my o6 gs for just over a year and the oil level is still not visible on the glass!!

"Oil light" as in the oil pressure warning? As long as there's enough oil for the pump to make the required output then the oil level in the sight glass is almost immaterial. However almost or no oil in the engine usually means the oil pressure light coming on.

It's not an oil level warning light.

The light is a warning for low oil pressure. Which is a different thing altogether

Cheers Ian, Will have a look tomorow when i get a chance,Havent touched it yet, but it sucks oil out of the sight glass when started so at least the oil pump is working..

Looks like you've been out having fun on the trials bike.:D

Catch up soon as we get a chance:beerjug: :thumb2

i agree, but from my understanding, the most important factors in an oil system is pressure and flow. In order to meet these two, there must be a sufficient level for the pump to function regardless of what the sight glass shows!

I perceive the sight glass to be a physical check incase the computer is showing either low level or low pressure. The level gauge lines are set to provide the pump with enough oil during all running conditions! i.e. round the world, on off road etc.

However, in the manual it does say that if level is low from the sight glass, top up at the next fuel stop. But says if the pressure light comes on, stop immediately!

For the OP, i think it says in the manual if there is oil in the sight glass, checked in the way the manual says, and the oil pressure light is on, seek BMW advice.
